Adam Scott Explains the Mental Mistakes Caused by Extreme Heat

Adam Scott enters the FedExCup Playoffs believing that one strong week could reshape far more than the remainder of his 2026 season.

A quality performance in Memphis could secure his place in the TOUR Championship. It could also improve his access to Signature Events and major championships next year, giving him far greater control over his schedule.

“There’s so much to gain from a good week right now.”

“It sets me up for what can be a year on my terms.”

Scott’s mentality is therefore based on opportunity rather than fear. Whatever happens beyond this point represents upside.

The Memphis heat, however, creates a challenge that goes beyond normal physical discomfort.

Scott believes the greatest danger is the mental error caused by fatigue. A player can lose concentration for only a moment, make an incomplete decision and immediately pay the price at TPC Southwind.

That nearly happened to him on the seventh tee.

Scott teed the ball on the right side of the box—a position that naturally encourages a player to start the shot left and shape it back with a fade. But he had never fully committed to that picture.

During the swing, he realised that the setup and intended ball flight did not match.

The result was a smothered draw over the left bunker and into the trees.

“I was mid-swing and not really feeling good.”

“I thought, that is just so silly to do something like that.”

Scott escaped without severe damage, partly because the seventh offered a less punishing place for that concentration lapse than many other holes at TPC Southwind.

The moment reinforced his warning: heat-related fatigue can create technical-looking errors that actually begin with the mind.

Scott also discussed the Player of the Year race.

He sees credible cases for several players and does not believe much currently separates the leading candidates. Different voters can prioritise major victories, total wins, THE PLAYERS Championship or sustained consistency.

Scott’s conclusion is that the next three weeks may ultimately decide the award.

“It might come down to these Playoffs.”

The Presidents Cup is also firmly on his radar.

Scott enjoyed his opening-round pairing with “Foxy”, and the two players spoke extensively about the International team. Scott sees growing momentum after recent victories and strong performances from players including Tom Kim, Foxy, Min Woo Lee and Si Woo Kim.

“I like the look of our team right now.”

Scott has not yet secured his own place. His objective is to play well enough in Memphis or the following week to remove any doubt and join the team at Medinah.

The enthusiasm is already there.

Now he needs the result.
