The Swing Change That Shocked Jack Nicklaus’ Career
Jack Nicklaus didn’t just dominate golf, he made a major swing change at 40 that completely transformed his game. In this video, I break down the real, documented adjustments Jack made with Jack Grout, why his swing had drifted, and how a small geometric fix led to one of the greatest comebacks in golf history.
Happy Thanksgiving, fairways and greens.

Years ago I was at the practice tee before one of the rounds of the Tucson Open at Tucson National. Jack Nicklaus was standing behing his son… I think it was Gary Nicklaus… as his son hit a mid iron toward a target. His son was landing only a few yards to the right of his target. I thought the shots were really good. However, Jack wanted the shots to land really close to the target and he gave his son some advice…. His son then started hitting shots much closer to the target… I will never forget the precision that Jack was looking for in this shot, and his patient advice that helped his son hit the target…
Jack off the course was as impressive as Jack on the course.
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy thanksgiving! Just shows even the best players aren't immune from losing their swing.
Fascinating research. At 4o, following a winless season, gets 2 majored tge following year
I never knew his swing was against the grain at the time. Then they all copied him. He said he felt it was on the target line longer when upright. Kind of makes sense
Happy days, he was that good wasn't he, I modelled my swing off his as a junior, it has changed, but it did give me a high ball flight which I still have today 👍🏽 great piece!
This is a great video. Thank you very much.
I genuinely miss watching golfers w swings that reflected their personalities (Big Easy, Player, Nicklaus, Monte, Singh) rather than a computer generated simulator looking swing w everyone hit same approach shot to same spot over + over
Scheffler seems to have the same swing DNA that Jack had: more upright stance, higher hands, a bit of a flying right elbow, and slightly across the line at the top. And he hits the same high fade. Scheffler does not seem to be obsessed with swing mechanics, and his swing coach, Randy Smith, has been smart to let Scotty’s swing DNA work without making any big changes. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain the long term consistency that Jack did.
Really enjoy your channel. Jack and Trevino were always my favorites as a kid. That 86 charge on the back nine is legendary. I go back and watch it from time to time and it still gives me goosebumps.
He also spent that offseason retooling his short game with Phil Rodger’s.
Damn wish you made this 10 years ago! This is very similar to my pattern. Had Jack flying elbow, upright swing, lifted heel, high over the left shoulder follow through. Strong legs. Jack junior. O.k. Not even close but its who I was built like and now that pattern caused the exact problems Jack had at 40. Last week similarly changed my takeaway to slightly flatter and no more hooks or high blocks. Just straight or slight draws. Feel more freedom and time! Never too late to adjust!
Yeah watched this again! Definitely more.depth! Still have my upright finish closer to my neck for my draw and my old golf DNA. Have to cup my wrist at top! Then I can feel the club head Weight! Gradually flatten left wrist on way down giving me more time to use my lower body hence more power!! Thank you again. Keep up the great analyses of these great players!
Thank you! can you do Greg Norman‘s swing next please?? love the channel! 👏
Love Jack. Why was he able to hit the ball significantly higher with his mid to long irons than his competitors?
Would like to see you analyze Michelle Wei’s swing some time.
Sorry to talk about something else on this video's comment section. I was just wondering if you might want to take a look at this guy with the Feel Force Golf Channel. His very simple premise of working with the inertia and force of the club has produced a couple of pretty amazing results, especially the last one, a guy named Corey. He does know a lot about the golf swing and distills it down to some simple takes that he has on developing lag and getting into a good late delivery position which we all know so many golfers lack in spades.
Corey is a forty-ish guy with a huge barrel chest and lacks a fair bit of golf flexibility as compared to reference standard for high level players. Despite the fact that the positions in his post instruction swing were still far from ideal, overall the dynamics were spectacularly better and frankly jaw-dropping especially considering that we're talking about one lesson and maybe a few dozen swings. There was definitely a bit of Ryan Fox in those later swings and Ryan might have taken some of the shots. It's very early days for Feel Force since the startup was fairly recent but some of your subs and viewers might find something helpful to glean from the content or find it interesting as swing enthusiasts. Cheers.
Have you ever done an analysis on Pane Stewart’s swing. I always thought he had a beautiful swing that I admired. I have recently seen a couple of videos on You Tube that didn’t have high regards for his technic. Obviously it worked for him, and to my untrained eye, I thought his swing was sweet. Thanks. Eli.
I remember watching Jack in 78' or 79' hit a heeled, pull hook drive. I even remember Jack was wearing a black shirt. I was shocked, it looked like his swing had fallen apart. Afterwards, the TV guy asked Jack about the drive. Very calmly, Jack said, my timing was off, I'll go see Jack Grout and we'll get it fixed.
In the 80's I knew a guy who idolized Arnold Palmer. I liked Arnie, but Jack and Tom Watson were my favorites. One day the guy got irritated with me and said, "You probably like Jack Nixon."
Grew up through the 60's-70's and kind of modeled everything around Jack's game. [why not, he is the greatest] Only played off and on after I graduated in 75' and was still able to play pretty well. Friend of mine asked me to go out with him because I noticed his clubs in the back of his car and it had been 5 years since playing and that was in 84'. I actually, shot that number of 84 [while also going into 14 bunkers that day] to match the year of my reboot. My buddy was kind of drop jawed. And so, it began!!! But I remember everything in this period of history and the minor swing changes. And of course, sitting on the edge of my seat like everyone else in 86' with his monster putter that sold millions!!! Not me though I still had my $5 northwestern that I grew up on. LOL But yes, as we get older and injuries happen it's inevitable to have to make minor changes because things just don't work like they used to………..
Like I keep saying…a good teacher can spot tendencies quickly and go from there.
