First-time ever seeing this, my curiosity peaked by upcoming Masters. Wow! I was certainly no golf fan growing up but I remember back then how amazed everyone was that Nicklaus won it. Seeing this, man, CBS couldn't have asked for a better final round with so many notable and great players in contention on the back nine and the drama involved. with each shot it seemed. Remember, Nicklaus wasn't even in the top 12 to start the final round and while he played a great, magical round of golf, there's no question he was aided by the screw-ups of Ballesteros and Norman on some of the holes and the agony of Kite missing the tying putt on 18. Again, just a remarkable final round of golf and masterful job by CBS crew making it compelling to watch.

It was kind of sad to watch Norman implode on 18…

The Roar at 1:42:21 was the roar of the Golden Bear. Everyone on the course and for miles around heard that one.

is this where we came in? April 7, 2023 - 7:03 pm

I was 13 yrs old, playing in the yard, my dad came out into our porch and said "YOU might wanna come in, the Bear just birdied 3 in a row!". I went in of course and ended up having one of my Mt. Rushmore's of memories with my Dad. I lost him 2 yrs ago, but I can't tell you how many times we talked about that day. Thank you Dad, you were the best, love and miss you bud.

I was born in 95 and still believe there is no more savage feat in sports history than this. This guy was SO LOCKED IN MY LORD he wasnt even in top 12 before that final round…

I remember watching this at 17. I had goosebumps, I still get them. Jack is the GOAT, 4-under for the last 4 holes!!!😃

Though he didn't win, you couldn't help to be impressed by Mickelson's final round this year (2023)

He shot the same score as Nicklaus in '86 on Sunday and he is almost 7 years older than Jack was at that time.

Jim Nantz first Masters.

1986. The first year that that the B.B.C. T.V. and Radio had The U.S. Masters.after six years with I.T.V and Channrel Four.

When Channel Four had The U.S. Masters 1983 1984 and 1985. Channel Four showed it on a one and a half delay. Meaning they could show all of C.B.S. coverage and longer commercial breaks. Channel Four got into trouble for interviewing Langer before Brent Messburger did. In 1986 The Masters gave The Masters back to the B.B.C. for LIVE and commerrcial free coverage.

Love that Nicklaus won this one. Back when players were classy. Makes me think of my Grandfather who taught me the game and proper etiquette.

JN is unquestionably the G.O.A.T. (…although a playoff between Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus would have been amazing to watch to keep the excitement going.) On the golf course Jack was the embodiment of talent, poise and nerves of steel. Still, I believe a healthy Tiger would have eventually taken top honors, (although not off the course). Sadly he continues to be the architect of his own downfall.

L Duranceau April 12, 2023 - 12:49 am

You wonder sometimes if Seve Ballesteros intentionally practices his putting stroke (1:29:10) while Tom Kite is putting in order to disturb him. He only stops practicing after Kite's putt is moving, and of course, misses.

Jim Davis April 12, 2023 - 2:02 am

Also. As a one time professional, it used to be, maybe it still is, that any PGA member can play 1 time at Agusta. JD

This in the GOAT, there's a reason he has more majors than anyone in Golf

The Lowdown Truth April 13, 2023 - 7:52 pm

One of the biggest chokes. It was Jack's destiny no matter what Norman or Kite could do.

John McAfee April 13, 2023 - 9:16 pm

2:30:32 "Ballesteros will win more than two Master's, I will guarantee you that."
Morgan Freeman voiceover: "Ballesteros would in fact, not win another Master's."

John letendre April 14, 2023 - 10:41 pm

What's ironic is Tom Kite finished 2nd(Tied) to Jack's last Green Jacket and 11 years later, he finished 2nd to Tiger Woods 1st Green Jacket.

“The Golden Bear” was the reason I started playing golf. It’s been a while since I last played a course, but I am back at it – at 62 years old now. Thank you for posting this amazing coverage!

Jim Jenkins April 15, 2023 - 2:57 am

Im watching this replay of the Masters for the first time. Tremendous! My father, who died in 1982, never saw his favorite golfer make the comeback in the history of golf. I am from Houston and defiantly caught the voice of Jim , (his first time announcing at the Masters). Jim, a member with the UH Golf team known as the 3 Amigos with Fred Couples and Blane McCallister.

Richard Poplis April 16, 2023 - 4:51 am

Great commentary by everyone on this show. NANCE… BOB MURPHY… VERN Lunquist… Gary Mccord.. Steve Melnick… Ben Wright…. Tom Weiskoff… Ken Venturi… Pat Summeral …

Jeff Cutler April 16, 2023 - 12:11 pm

I'll never forget this. It was a magical, magical Masters.

Richard Poplis April 16, 2023 - 3:33 pm

PAT Summerall was such a great commentator. NOT JUST FOOTBALL GAMES… GOLF AND TENNIS TOO HE WAS GREAT AT

Ashley Bradford April 17, 2023 - 3:46 pm

why did you make this so long?

jamsjr44 April 19, 2023 - 2:02 am

I was a sophomore in high school and had rarely watched any golf. But for some reason I turned this on and watched the entire round and have never missed it since then. Have been fortunate to attend two practice rounds in 2017 & 2019!

Redfield London April 21, 2023 - 3:02 am

So many Masters proctologists on the commentary team and in the message boards. 😆🤣

Redfield London April 21, 2023 - 3:17 am

39:35 Kite & Seve BOTH holed wedges for EAGLE at #8 but no footage exists?! What passed for coverage back then?! 😆🤦

Michael Muldowney April 22, 2023 - 1:16 pm

I often wonder just what kind of ovation Jack would have gotten had he sunk the long putt on 18. Its unlikely that that roar would EVER have been matched.

Dorothy Gale April 24, 2023 - 11:02 pm

After 14 holes, Nicklaus was at -5, 4 shots behind the leader. After 17 holes, Jack was at -9, leading by 1 shot. Three incredible holes….eagle, birdie, birdie….executed when the pressure was most intense and when he needed it most.

Jack’s 2nd shot on 15, a 4 iron on that par-5, was one of the most glorious golf shots I have ever seen. Hit a mile high and stuck when it hit the green as if he had hit a 9-iron and set up his eagle. Nicklaus could hit long-iron shots that nobody else was capable of hitting.

Youtube is such a gift, to allow us to relive these amazing historical sporting moments

That Georgia bunch of racist thought the masters should not be won by foreigners that created the sport. Wow!

Sean Scott May 4, 2023 - 1:29 pm

Norman's approach on 18 was basically a shank. The announcers were kind in not being too critical, and i think they made the right call, which in this case was a no call. It was such a great final round, and there was no need to ruin the mood. By focusing on what a momentous occasion, the day had been being as it was Nicklaus' 20th major tournament victory, instead of the blunders of Ballesteros, and Norman the appropriate the commentary was the right decision.. ( 6 Masters, 5 PGA Championships, 4 US Opens, 3 Open Championships, and 2 US Amateurs.)

MegaSmarterthanyou May 10, 2023 - 5:07 am

The announcers make jack sound like hes blind , give me a break..

Mark Vigneron May 22, 2023 - 1:18 am

I just realized that Jim Nance is on the call on this …..in 1986!!!!

AdamFerrari May 22, 2023 - 3:15 am

The greatest crowd of all time.

Ben Masters May 24, 2023 - 8:48 am

5:51: Jim Nantz introducing himself as reporting the action at the 16th hole, in a role that defined him (and still defines him) more than anything else he has done in his over 3.5-decade career with CBS Sports (more than college football, NCAA hoops and the NFL [all of which he covered both from the studio and calling games; he still calls games on NFL coverage as their lead man alongside Tony Romo on color]; one of his best calls will always be Tiger Woods on the 1997 Masters, where Tiger's winning putt was put quite well on Nantz's part ["There it is– a win for the ages"]).

The Tzar June 5, 2023 - 6:15 pm

" and Theres no doubt about it , the bear has come out of hibernation " – Jim nance is the goat …

He was doing 16th hole

Biff Jackson June 12, 2023 - 1:37 am

Classic 'choke' by Norman in a major event. He made a career out of it. Then years later he joins up with the Saudis to try and destroy the tour that made him millions.

Mike Darnell June 15, 2023 - 7:22 pm

I could watch this round 100 times and never get tired of it. Amazing! Never be another Jack.

DT June 18, 2023 - 8:34 am

Can you blame Bodestrras. He needs a green card to enter America. I'd be post off

John June 18, 2023 - 4:07 pm

What an event.

Nicklaus was steamed after bogeying 12, after being on such a run of 3 straight birdies, on as many holes. In his greatness although perturbed, he was like "nah im not done with a bogey on this little headache". -5 under from then on with the 30 on the back totalling for 65, which only Gary Player's otherwordly 64 in '78 has bettered, as final round victorious score. The alterations made to the National, evidently prevented such comebacks as possible. As one of those sterling quality hasn't happened. So many interesting stories within any Master's, and this one was rife with them. Among these Pavin's weeks calamitous play on the 16th hole. On successive days following eagles on the 15th, he finds the water hazard. For the week he was 5 or 6 shots over par on the 16th hole alone. How about Norman's shank on 18, which a block of such magnitude is in factual terms. In closing when hearing Mr. Ken Venturi's laments in kind, that sometimes appear when an unfortunate soul blows the tournament, unless one is aware of his history, such instances might appear hyperbolic, or just a bit much. As an amatuer in 1954 Venturi had an 8 shot lead going into the final day. He was beaten by a 71 by winner Jackie Burke Jr. Venturi's final round 80, lost by 1 shot, and to this day an amateur is yet to win a Green Jacket. He was in the final group, and tied with Palmer in '58, and some miraculous feats by Palmer including a hole out, whilst playing a provisional for par, as well as eagling the 13th again felled his hopes. The man likely had post traumatic stress, or as close to it as golf allows. His heat stress, verging on a stroke in his victorious effort at the '64 US Open at long last made him a major champion, as a journeyman tour player. They used to play 36 holes on the final day. Congressional in July of '64 was intensely hot, but to his credit, at long last he didn't wilt in a major. I bristle when people belittle Mr. Ken Venturi, because he loved the game, and deserves more respect, than hes oft given.

Tiger's win here in 2019 was so reminiscent of this
