  1. Yeah 100% his 341 Yards at the PGA Champs to win the US title shows you what a freak he was. I'm 62 and have played what Jack did; Titleist balata 100 compression balls with a 43 in steel shafted Persimmon driver and that thing spins so much it doesn't go very far the rock LD balls back then went easy 20 yards further.

  2. Another difference is shaft length. The average golfer has gained distance with the 46 inch shaft. But because it's difficult to time such a long shaft they have gained that distance into the trees.

  3. It’s not so much the fact that the ball goes so much further as much as there is so much less spin on the ball from a perspective of control. Players today can take enormous rips at the ball with very forgiving gear and aren’t penalized all that much if they miss a shot.

When you watch a shot on a shot tracer, notice how the shape of the shot peaks and then falls pretty much straight down. A Balata doesn’t do that. It keeps drawing or cutting.

There were plenty of guys who could hit it 300+ in Jacks day but most couldn’t control the ball so they couldn’t make cuts.

Golf used to be a game that rewarded precision more than distance, but Jack figured out how to do both with a high spinning ball.
