They both tied the next hole and they went to the third hole. Long par three. Tiger hit one long way from the hole. Ball going up the center of the green. Well, right at the hole. Think that was hit fat. Had to be a little heavy. He had a lot of spin on it. Ernie also hit one a long way from the hole. He had a lot of sid spin on his big kick to the right. They both had fairly difficult putts. Obviously almost impossible. Tiger actually hit a wonderful putt to about 15 ft. That is not bad at all. And Ernie had a very good putt from where he was to about 8 ft. And I looked at Gary and Gary looked at me and we both said, “I hope they both make it or both miss it.” Obviously, Tiger, I mean, he had the toughest putt you could ever believe. It was up, over, down, falling away to the right, going down the hill and dark. [Applause] I’ve never seen Tiger so pumped up when he made a putt. Tiger knew it. He started running to the hole. Ernie didn’t have a particularly difficult putt until Tiger made his. [Applause] Ernie hit it center cut and it was absolutely beautiful putt. You all know the rest. We had we conferred with Commissioner Finchum. We thought that the right thing was to tie and share the cup. All of our players, Tiger, Ernie and Jack and I all feel it should be a tie. Anybody who didn’t think that was the right thing, you just weren’t there. And you had to be there to understand how really fantastic that was. I say that’s great, Captain. Well done. Well done. That’s great. The fans walking away arm in- arm chanting. I still get choked up about it.

Following 3 playoff holes between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, both teams agreed on calling it the first and only tie in Presidents Cup history.

The intersection of golf and culture.

Behind every drained putt or hosel rocket into the stands is a human being with complex emotions—among them, an insatiable appetite for golf. That’s what we’re after. Golf’s humanity is what makes it so special to us. There have never been more reasons to love this game, and we’re endeavoring to explore them all.

  1. The GOAT, amazing career. If it wasn’t for the amount of great players around he would have 30 majors instead of 19

  2. Left out: And then Gary player started arguing that the International Team should receive the Cup, which had been won outright by the US two years previously. Jack shut that down right away.

  3. I’m about to turn 50. I rem watching this. Without a doubt the greatest display of clutch golf I’ve ever witnessed. It was insane
