me to “Golf Without A Hitch.” Actually, you’d invited me before, but the timing didn’t work out… Finally, I’m here today. How have you been these days? Well, as always, I’m playing golf, working out… But recently I picked up something new. I got into running. Honestly, it hasn’t been long since I started, because I really don’t like
getting out of breath, haha. I used to avoid cardio completely, but then I went running along
the Han River with a friend. And it felt so much more fun
than just running on a treadmill. The scenery changes, there are lots
of people—it’s just more exciting. Now it feels weird not to run.
My body actually itches if I don’t. So that’s what I’ve been into lately. I heard you even did subway announcements? Yeah, it’s been about a year
since I did that voice work. It’s not something you get to
experience often in life. So I even rode the Shinbundang
Line a few times just to hear my voice. It felt so new and fun. I’m really thankful to Doosan Construction
for giving me the opportunity. How did you feel about being
on this episode today? I’ve watched a few episodes with other pros, and honestly, Gook-jin takes down a lot of pros. He’s beaten them quite a few times, haven’t he? And Seosansu CC is basically his home course… So I was a bit nervous coming here, to be honest. I really need to do well… But can I? I was nervous coming… Even now… It feels less like a shoot and
more like an actual match. I heard there’s a long line of people
waiting to invite you Hyun-joo. Well, I was in that line, haha. I waited in line, but the line was so long. People kept leaving, but I stayed. Have you been playing a lot lately? Since it’s season, yes, but recently it’s been so hot I haven’t
been out for a few days. You know, when Hyun Joo is in a tournament, it’s always a hot topic. Play well—it’s a hot topic. Play badly—it’s still a hot topic. How does everything you do become news? Wait, are you trying to tease me right now? Why would I tease you~~ I waited in line for three years just to meet you, why would I tease you the moment I see you? Let’s just enjoy today. Let’s just have fun today. Fighting, Hyun-joo! Do you have a pre-round routine? Of course! Since it’s an outdoor sport, you gotta put on sunscreen! That’s right. Sunscreen is non-negotiable. You absolutely need it. Then let’s put some on before we start—this one. Wow, this looks interesting. Someone big might even eat this by mistake, thinking it’s a vitamin. It’s not sticky at all either. Golfers basically live on the course, so sunscreen is a big deal. This is the N.Doctor

straight down the middle like that? Wow~~ Good shot~~ That’s the swing I’ve only seen on TV—
no pauses, straight into it! People around me… When I play with amateurs and friends, they always say, after watching your swing, “I want to swing like Kim Gook Jin!” I’ve heard that so many times. My dream swing! Haha My ideal swing is Kim Gook Jin swing! Relaxed and effortless it looks. People just love that. I’m just hacking at it… But honestly, even I think wow.. Your swing looks so smooth. If you can swing like that, you could play golf at
120 years old, hahaha. And you don’t even take
practice swings anymore. I saw that, and thought… maybe I should try it. So from this summer, I tried
hitting without practice swings. And you know what—
it actually felt pretty good. The shot I just hit—that was
literally the first swing of today. No warm-up, nothing. Guys, I tend to go too hard through impact. So the distance, back and forth… I sometimes miss my distance control, especially when I’m nervous,
it tends to go long. And since this is the first hole,
I was nervous. So I’ll try to be more mindful
about my distance control. The pin’s way back—there’s
basically no room behind it. Was that a wood? Hahaha… I’m going with a driver… Wow, so effortless. Ohhh good shot! That’s stuck! That’s on the pin! It’s on the pin! Wow~~ See, I didn’t want to go long… Every pro has their miss patterns. For me, it’s going in too hard through impact, and when I’m nervous, it goes long. I literally told myself I’d control my distance because it’s a back pin, but even with that mindset, I hit it long. That just shows how nervous I am today. It’s for sure I’m really nervous right now. When you’re tense, you don’t even
realize you’re putting more into it. Among the pro golfers we call it, “the adrenaline explosion.” That’s right. Everyone’s adrenaline explodes differently. Yours made the ball fly past the pin. Amateurs’ adrenaline bursts make the ball fly left, right, anywhere but straight. Haha, so their adrenaline explodes in their heads? Wow…I guess I don’t have enough adrenaline. Mine’s lacking, yours is exploding. Me? Nothing at all. Alright~ Come on, adrenaline—burst a little! So that was a hook line? Not really, I just pulled it. When I putt, my adrenaline bursts and I end up yanking it left. I do that a lot. It seemed like it would break right, but yours actually broke left. Would you say the right side? From here it looks like this side, yeah. Turns out it was a double. Ah, double. Hook, slice. Both start with pars. I was also conflicted earlier. I felt like it might straighten out, but… Sometimes it’s better to just not put it in. when it’s making you stressed out. Better to just hit it casually instead. Seriously, my skin tans so easily. People say “Of course you tan,
you’re in the sun,” but with me, it’s more than that. I tan from heat itself. A little, haha. Not the sun, from the temperature~ Yeah, like a plant, haha. Even with long sleeves and
pants, completely covered, if it’s hot outside, I come home looking darker than when I left. So I always have to reapply sunscreen constantly. You need it. Good shot~! Good shot~! Whoa… Even under pressure, right down the middle~ A bit… Ah, didn’t catch that clean. That’s fine~ No problem~ Most shots aren’t hit perfectly anyway~ Mine wasn’t hit flush either. This hole has an uphill slope, right? Even though your head
doesn’t consciously think it, your body instinctively feels
like the ball won’t launch well. You just feel that. When that happens, I try to slightly open the clubface— not fully open, but just a little. To get more carry. Yeah, to help it launch higher. I think that strategy helps for sure. That’s how I should’ve done. But instead, I hit it low just
now on that uphill, didn’t I? Still worked out though. Ohhh~~ nice on! See that? Hahaha. Kept it low the whole way, haha. That was amazing to watch. Even bounced twice? Twice, right? And stopped perfectly. Yeah, so, that’s the scary part of
“Gold Without A Hitch.” We just hack at it! Wow… How does it even end up like that… Hahahaha In front of Hyun-joo, this is so embarrassing. No, no. Golf is all about results. Still, no matter the result, that
trajectory was… something else. Honestly… I’m a little torn here. It’s 123m including uphill. Since it’s a tabletop green, if I don’t carry it enough, it’ll be short. You want to make sure it carries. My 9-iron goes 120. But with the hill it’ll land early. If I use an 8-iron, with
adrenaline it’ll go too far. 8 is too much, 9 is too little… What do you recommend? I’d say 8-iron. Even with adrenaline? Even with adrenaline, I’d go 8. Maybe that was a little long? Really well hit. But judging by people’s reactions… they’re looking behind the pin. Ah that was basically one club too much. 9 would’ve been perfect. 9 was the right choice~~ This spot reminds me of
where I did an approach during the “Match Play” episode. Back then, when we did the approach… The green is a bit slow… The ball just zipped right past. Our team actually lost this
hole because of that. It zipped right past, haha. The green’s a bit slow here. Go, go, go, go… Wow, it’s not rolling. Yeah, a little slow. Just missed the par… Don’t leave it short! I focused too much on the line. If not for that, it would’ve dropped. Nice~~~ But this bogey here… if you’d gone with 9, it would’ve been a birdie. I told you to take the 8… Based on the shot alone… Right, it was a satisfying shot. It was birdie quality. It went straight for the pin. Right to the pin. But it hurts when you walk away
with a bogey from a swing that good. If you miss because you mess up badly, at least it makes sense. But when you make a bogey
after hitting like me…. It launched so well like this, but you grabbed a bigger club because of me. No, no, that was on me. I said “8-iron~~” Oh no, that was bad. It’s okay~~~ But the bounce right saved it. Wow…hahaha Man…seriously… You can really see the difference between a pro’s
shot and an amateur’s. You know, When I first started, my dad used to coach me in a way that really emphasized flashy golf. Like, “Drive it close, make birdies!” That was the mindset drilled into me as a kid. But once I became a pro, I realized—
golf is all about the short game. Doesn’t matter if the shot
looks amazing or not. If it’s fat or thin, crawls or bounces up… No matter how the process goes… Are you talking about me? That’s me you’re describing.. haha. As long as it ends with par or
birdie, that’s all that matters. Look, last hole, I striped a great drive, then a second shot straight at the pin— but it went long. Left me a tough downhill chip. I mess it up, then miss the putt. It’s a bogey! See… Golf is all about the short game! Bottom line: golf is about the short game. So short game is the key? I knew you’d hit well~~ Oh, stop, stop! Over the bunker, nice! Really nice, haha. That’s where I wanted to be. Watching you, I’ve figured out your style. You play a “running style” of golf. Hahahahaha The ball lands short, Uh… bunker… bunker.. then it runs over the bunker, haha. Run past most things~ That’s me, haha. My way is just, “it’ll all pass~” That one worked out nicely. Wow…hahaha See? Golf is short game, everyone! All useless. Forget the flashy stuff. —it’s just eye candy. Wow, golf is… It’s about the short game. Nah, golf’s long game! Golf is about the long game! Hit it solid~ It’s better to just do a bogey. Rolling, rolling… Going downhill… That’s even worse. Golf is long game. Well, you see, players with strong short games don’t lose many strokes. Safer? In tournaments, short game is where the scores come from. And if your short game is good, you’re not worried even if you miss the green. Ohhhh~~~ That’s on such a good line! See, everyone? After all the struggles off the tee, nearly going in the bunker, then having 150m downhill
to go for the third shot… You stick it like that and
you’ve got a birdie chance. That’s golf. 71 meters, a bit of a hook lie. And with all this adrenaline today… Wow, that’s such a good strike. Uh oh, a little left… Uh oh, a little left… Wait, not long, right? Nope, that’s just about right. Phew, lucky. You know, amateurs always struggle with these sloped lies. Even for me, just now—because of the hook lie, plus nerves, my legs didn’t work properly. So I pulled it left. Hook lies already go left, and when you add tension and extra effort… I changed my ball marker, by the way. Switched to the Masters logo. Started the first two holes
with the Seosansu marker, but now I’m playing with a Masters. Masters mindset! Yep! Masters mindset! Wow, the distance… Look, you landed it right here, rolled 30 centimeters. Me? My ball rolled from way
back there, 30 meters, haha. The thing is yours is closer! That’s what importance~~ Ah..… Just missed the birdie putt. Golf is short game! Still missing by just a little. By a perilla leaf… That’s like four layers of perilla leaves away. You know those really thick perilla leaves? You get in the countryside. Real healthy ones~ They get thick. I wanted to eat it, but then it kept… Finally, a tough birdie putt drops! See—after your tee shot, you were like, Golf is short game?! You really think so?! Then, you make a birdie. It was a long game for me
from the second, too. My second, third—all long game. Your third shot was so good. Even out of the rough. I’ve been in those spots often. And when I play golf, I don’t usually stress too much. I just think, “Okay, I’ll make
a good shot from there.” I’ll start playing with that mindset, too.
Playing without overthinking. Oh~~~~ Pulled it. But I love how quick your routine is. Ah, pulled again… But hey, that’s pin! Wow… adrenaline really is kicking in today. That was a pitching wedge. I hit 9-iron, haha. I definitely love running shots. Love the rollout~ Mine runs five times farther! Oh, thank you. Wow, that was solid. It ought to pass that much. putts look so easy? So smooth… You’ve got real confidence
with that distance, huh? That’s why you’re able to hit your
first putt firm, past the hole. You trust your comeback putt,
so you can be aggressive. Driver? Do we need it here? Gotta hit driver. Though it does feel a bit narrow
on the right side. Good shot~! Golf is short game! Wow, what a swing. Okay, long game does matter too. I’ll show you from this hole on. Yes, show me. I want to feel that. I actually changed my mindset today. I’ve been overanalyzing shots too much. From now, I’ll be like you. Just look, decide, and swing. Whatever happens, happens. That’s the way. Ah, hitting second makes me feel so relaxed. Good shot..! Oh, is the right side higher? Yeah, it slopes up there. Ah, so you really know this green inside out. The ball caught a side-spin
from the right slope. And now a perfect birdie chance. Good shot~~ Straight in, right? Straight in! It’s in!! It’s… wait… Huh? Hahaha Didn’t it… Nope, didn’t drop, haha. No,, I mean… it.. The ball’s still there, bright white. It’s white, but… Bright white, right there, haha. I wanted it to disappear. I guess it didn’t. From back here, it looked like it went in! Hit the slope there. Caught the downhill, perfect strike. Honestly, isn’t this more of a perfect strike? Anyone would agree… This is the ideal… Ah~ Like that… I’ll hold that. Good shot~~~ Good shot, good shot! Good shot~! Oh! The camera director.. Wow, nice little turn there. See, that’s perfect. Oh, that was really good Left side’s mine, the nicer lie’s yours. Here it’s… It’s closer than I thought… that’s why you said it was good? Hahaha You wanted it to be farther~ But you ended up right in
the middle of the fairway! He hit while talking, haha. Good shot~! 199… If I hit a wood, it might go over. We’ve got a decision to make, again. My utility goes about 190 carry. Yeah, 190. But we’ve got a headwind here. It’s about 200 meters. A bit downhill. The wind’s pushing back pretty strong.
