Zhao Xintong became the first Chinese player to win the World Snooker Championship as the qualifier completed his stunning march to the title with a 18-12 victory against Mark Williams
Zhao etched his name in history at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre by securing the seven frames needed to claim the title, having established a commanding 11-6 lead during Sunday’s sessions.
At 28, he became only the second Chinese player to reach the World Championship final, following in the footsteps of Ding Junhui, who achieved the feat in 2016.
Unlike Ding, who lost to Mark Selby in that final nine years ago, Zhao delivered a composed and fearless performance to overcome three-time champion Mark Williams.
His victory earned him a £500,000 ($663,000) payday and made him the first Asian player ever to win the World Championship, securing his place in snooker history.
