  1. I would give the nod to Tiger as I think the depth of talent was better when he played. Don’t get me wrong, Jack had to go up against some Hall of Fame players but most of the time it came down to a half dozen players who realistically had a chance to win.

  2. In some measure, this is just reflective of the time we live in. There were also multiple other greats in earlier times, but we are prejudiced by our time. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead … incredible records and players. And what do we mean by the greatest of all time, especially with clubs and courses changing so much over the decades. Jack won the most majors, probably the simplest measuring stick.

  3. The best ball strikers were in the 50's and 60's because they played with inferior golf balls and far inferior clubs. So given Jack's record in majors and Tigers dominance they are too close to call, but if I had to pick one I say Jack. Also Trevino and Hogan where the best ball strikers along with Sam.

  4. I would put Tiger barely in the Top 5 All-time after Nicklaus, Jones, Hogan & Walter Hagen.. Major and major-equivalent wins are important but so is the primacy of those wins.. the earliest wins should be valued more..

  5. Regardless of who you like show respect for the other guy. People on here disrespecting Tiger or Jack are way off. Tiger won more PGA titles than Jack and the Tiger slam. Tiger had a better collegiate career. Jack has more majors. Either way it is close. Glad I saw them both play!!

  6. Both had incredible mental toughness. In some ways Jack was more fun as he could surge at the end of the last round. Tiger was more steady over 4 rounds.

  7. It’s impossible to compare eras in any sport. Especially golf where the courses, greens, equipment, etc. is so different from Jack’s era to now. But I break it down like this. Tiger had the better “peak prime” and Jack had the better overall career.

  8. Tiger never had to face Jack on Sunday. At almost 60, Jack beat Tiger at the Masters one year. Jack had more class on the course, which is more important than who was the greatest.

  9. Nobody will ever dominate the way tiger did again, if jack had had tigers relatively boor driving accuracy he would have won maybe half those majors, it's the same comparison with every sport, modern players are athletes and as much as i love jack he simply would not have won any where near the same amount of tournaments, also, in jacks day the pool of elite ball strikers was much smaller.

  10. Jack is a farrrr better man. He’s about as moral and upstanding a family man as there is. Tiger….mot so much…

  11. Ben Hogan, No father, built his own swing. Hit head on by a Greyhound bus and still won majors. Or as one of his contemporaries responded "All I know is I've seen Jack Nicklaus watch Ben Hogan practice. But I've never seen Ben Hogan watch Jack Nicklaus." And I love Jack.

  12. My comparison is all about their complete game. At their best, great drivers of the golf ball, exceptional iron players, clutch putters, excellent course management….

  13. Personally, I go with Byron Nelson. In 1945 he won 18 out of the 30 tournaments he entered, including 11 in a row. He retired a year later at age 34, so no one knows how many more he might have won, had he continued to play. Another feat of his, is that he won money in 113 tournaments in a row, at a time when only the top 20 players earned money. Yes, much of the above was during the war years, but Hogan and Snead played in many of those tournaments. We'll never know how the various golfing greats would have stacked up against each other, but there were great golfers in every era, including Bobby Jones, Nelson, Snead, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, and Woods, among others.

  14. I am 76 years old. At one time I carried a 6 handicap. I have ONE autograph and only ONE! It is on a golf program and framed on my wall in my Den. Thanks again for signing my program, Jack‼️ Jerry H.

  15. The only thing you need to make this choice is this: 18 majors, 19 2nd place finishes in majors. That’s it. Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer ever. End of story. Goodbye. The end. Any questions?

  16. Commentators all the time say that winning majors is the most important. They say a career is defined by how many majors a player wins. In this regard, Jack is the greatest player of all time.

  17. Who holds the best scoring average for a season?

At his peak, TW reached a higher peak and its unquestionable but Jack was no slouch

  18. Tiger Woods and its not even close. Jack has the record for majors and was a truly outstanding player, however nobody that has walked this earth has been able to play the game the way Tiger Woods has. If Tiger didn't have off course problems, and injuries, he would have won 25+ Majors easily. Peak Tiger vs Peak Jack, and Tiger wins by plenty!

  19. If you think Jack Nicklaus was a better player than Phil Mickelson, you should try watching golf sometime. Tiger is head and shoulders above both.

  20. Tiger had a higher winning percentage against better and deeper fields in both regular season events and majors so that's going to be the deciding factor in my opinion. Tiger did things Jack never did also winning 4 majors in a row, winning 9 times in a year and winning a major by 15 shots.

  21. Nicklaus is #2. The competition he faced every week was not as stiff as what Tiger faced. The reason he and Palmer and Casper and Hogan and Snead were able to win so many tournaments is because there were so few others who had a legit chance to win, in part because the money wasn't nearly as big as it was when Tiger played. Jack was amazing. But show me the volume of spectacular iron shots and incredible putts that can match those of Tiger.
