  1. I was lucky enough to play a round at the National on sponsors day that year (takes place about a month after the tournament)… will never forget walking from 12 to 13…. I was thinking about this shot and this birdie (shoulda been an eagle) and was going to retrace his steps.

Tragically, since I suck, I hit it in the trees on the other side of the creek down the left side of the fairway and spent most the hole looking for that errant tee shot (never did find it).

I was, however, able to stand in that same area and contemplate a shot from those same pine needles… but only because I hit my tee shot on 14 so far right that it ended up in the same place.

It was still amazing though. I’ll cherish that day forever, even if I had shot 150. Which I’m relatively sure I didn’t do.

  2. Obviously he knows way more about golf than all of us combined or hope to ever know, but he could’ve laid up there pretty easily lmao. Tip of the cap for pulling it off that’s awesome

  3. Not only the best, most pressure filled, important, and risky shot of all time…..but hearing an EXPERT break down their craft is priceless!!!

  4. I know everything he is saying is factually accurate.
My success rate for such shots unfortunately is about 8%.
So am I going for it?
    Well heck yes!!! EVERY TIME!!!!
    👍👴🏌‍♂️⛳️🇺🇸🦅

  5. Call me crazy, but I’ve played a lot of golf in my life and watched a lot of golf too and I’ve never thought that this shot was really all that difficult for a player of his caliber. And hearing him explain it in technical terms kind of reinforced my opinion, especially when he admitted that he may have slightly pulled it.

My main argument is that he had a wide open shot to the middle of the green. The ball was sitting on pine needles, but these guys are good enough to hit off pine needles, so that shouldn’t have been a problem and then when it came to the tree, I think it was the camera angle. It looked like his swing was impeded by the tree but he was able to make a full swing without worrying about his club hitting the tree. Therefore, just aim at the middle of the green. Plus the green slopes to the right, which is where the pin was.

    Seriously am I crazy?

  6. I was lucky enough to play in the FedEx St. Jude Pro Am about 20 years ago. The regional mgr of FedEx hosted a dinner for all us lucky SOBs the night before. Phil was there. Dude is scary intelligent, patient, and he actually asked me questions about Titleist products I played. This was when he was still with them, prior to Callaway and other more lucrative endorsements.

  7. It seems Professional golfers keep strategy and how they feel their hits land to themselves because they are playing against the folks who build courses so they keep their small advantages
