Jack Nicklaus reacts to all-time best moments from the Memorial Tournament | PGA TOUR Originals
okay sit back and enjoy Jack Nicholas the architect and Visionary behind this course dedicated to his hometown of Columbus Ohio you know I’ve had a lot of accomplishments the game of golf and I don’t think there’s any greater than this one mirfield Village the house that Jack built I want to give you one quick story it leaves a legacy that lasts long beyond my golf game and my life time oh what a great [Applause] cut he’s the champion that’s what Happ I’ve had a blast there I love it oh yes lot of great shots lot of great memories tiger at 14 that was one of the most incredible golf shots I think you’ll ever see there you go Justin Rose St tricker tiger got a pretty good resume of winners don’t we look at that what a round Victor hlin is the champion Jack Nicholas’s prize tournament title the memorial [Music] 10 years ago 1966 on this piece of land we started thinking about a new golf tournament something that we could do for the game of golf well here we are in 1976 in the first Memorial Tournament when we formed mirfield in the Memorial tournament I wanted to be the best tournament that I could be in the game of golf I don’t think I would ever want to host a tournament that I wouldn’t play in myself Columbus has given me so much they’ve supported me through my whole career let’s bring golf back to Central Ohio we had three objectives in mind and holding the first Memorial Tournament first further the game of golf if at all possible by building a good golf course not only for the golfer but for The Spectator I try to take and utilize what I thought was right for the game of golf and what was really challenge the player that is aesthetically pleasing and put put that combination together and I had the opportunity at befi Village to be able to do all those things and continue to tweak the golf course slightly and I think the golf course right now is really good I think the players feel that way and I I hope they enjoy playing it it is such a hurdle to win it in Jack’s house and win on a golf course that is so challenging dad first and foremost wanted to bring the best players in golf to his hometown and have them perform on the best canvas the best golf course that he could present the Memorial tournament is very special to me I think it’s very special to a lot of players and I think that fellas who have won the tournament have gone on to win a lot of other golf tournaments a lot of majors and we’re very proud of that that the list of winners at Memorial Tournament are really the best players of the game of golf that was probably the most difficult tourament that I’ve ever won well back in 1977 I was 37 years old I was really concentrating more on putting on a golf tournament than playing in a golf tournament I really wanted to win the Memorial tournament I’d worked very hard to bring it about I also want to be able able to have my name my list of winners a birdie in sole possession of the league how about that made a putt I did everything that week I was managing what was going on directing people Angelo is cading for me and filled up his pockets with cigarette butts and papers and things all kinds of debris trying to keep the golf course clean people were asking me questions as I was playing how do you want to handle this at number 12 what do you think about the gallery coming in over what do you think about I’m doing that all while I’m playing golf frankly I enjoyed that but it was probably the most difficult week I’ve ever had to win a golf tournament in my life I don’t know how he plays as well as he does with all the distractions I didn’t win in the first year the second year I I played well and I got myself in a position to win and won with the rain came high winds and crackling lightning the golfer’s most fearsome enemy and we had a rain delay and we had to come back the next morning to finish Nicholas birdie at 11 put him three shots ahead I had to play a three iron end of the last green and I do remember that and the pit was in the back left I carried it in right behind the hole but because of the rain the day before the greens were soft and it stopped right there and I two put it for the wind you know I was very proud that I was able to overcome what other things I had to do but to concentrate enough on playing golf enough to win it was certainly a huge thrill I’ve had a lot of accomplishments in the game of golf and um I don’t think there any greater than this one and nothing gave me a bigger thrill I running a golf tournament and uh tried to play in it and ended up winning I mean that was it was pretty special hello I’m Jack neckolas and welcome to the 1984 Memorial Tournament we hope you enjoy the show 17 where we go right now Jack Nicholas the host oh my that way right way right Ben remember I ended up getting bogey after Ed out of Bounce at 17 that hit the cart path and bounced over the property fence and it’s in someone’s patio the wind was blowing hard left to right and I hit a driver that I hit in the neck and cut it a little bit and the wind got it and just went right over went over the Mounds and rolled right out of bounce up onto a patio and I said oh my gosh it’s almost hard to imagine Nicholas hitting a shot that far offline a most uncharacteristic swing I played another ball it isn’t all over for Jack Nicholas if he can make this partt for a five and having design the green he knows exactly its characteristics this really is the moment of truth has a CH oh what a great cut and the is like an eagle for Nicholas the credit goes to Nicholas for that bogey that he made at 17 to show you that after a disastrous t- shot to come back gather yourself and one shot one hole a play he’s still not good then I part 18 he’s going to make Andy Bean win it he wants to win not going to give him anything and he had Boogie the last hole so I got the play off the power five 15th was HED with birdies the par 316th have with pars it ended on 17 a really good swing he put on that one straight down the middle the hole that was so rude to Nicholas the first time around today became the doormat for his celebration this for the half and uh away to the 18th never never gave it a chance he just pulled it didn’t even touch the hole and he missed a short F Well felt sorry for Andy there a rather sad ending for Andy bean and a joyous moment for Jack Nicholas you look EX atin I am Steve and uh you know I don’t like to win a tournament by somebody else’s misses but I obviously will take him any way I can get him I won nearfield in 84 before I won the Masters in ‘ 86 which was my last regular tour Victory it was pretty special to have been left regular tour without a major being at mirfield Village it’s always nice to be able to play in front of a home Crown crowd and obviously to win is is even more fun 93 say8 in her hit it in the left [Music] bunker Paul ainger and pay Stewart the last tusome of the day this huge Gallery here at 18 they know the Imports he and Payne Stewart were coming down the wire and pay was leading by a shot coming to the 18th hole and ainger put it in the bunker I didn’t catch a very good lie in the bunker and I figured good grief you know don’t make a bogy here and miss a playoff and then pay put it in the bunker behind him and I saw Payne fried I didn’t figure pay could get it nearly as close as he did he hit an unbelievable shot that’s pretty good bucker shot he played there but even a better bucker shot’s about to come all I was thinking about was what I had to do not what I was afraid might happen and uh which kind of reminds me of Mr [Applause] necklace yes what a great bunker shot go try that shot sometime that is a tough shot and now the heat is on pay Stewart his friend Paul ainger has tied him P misses but two shot swing and instead of pay winning Paul won Paul azinger wins the memorial and immediately he has feelings for his friend pay St pay and I are so close it’s I think it’s good justification for not having any real close friends out here I’ve never been so happy and so disappointed for somebody in my life at the same time I think it’s great to compete against the friend that’s where you have the most fun if you look up at the leaderboard and you see Palmer or player or Watson or Travino uh they were going to play well and you had to play well to me it made it more fun it was a doggy dog got to battle all day it was just a heck of a match come to the 18th hole in pain to get the bad break that he got but to Paul to make the shot that he got I mean that’s just something else that’s just absolutely unbelievable Golf and Paul asinger with the look of a champion again don’t ever quit that a great shot one to be [Applause] remembered Jack is coming down the hill to applaud him in person here it is to make it official and Jack’s there to greet him this has about as special as it gets that was that was well thanks for having us again happy for you thank you Jack thank thanks buddy it’s uh it’ be pretty cool you know you see all the winners kind of come off the green get to shake Jack Nichol’s hand I feel like that’s very special when you watch golf on TV growing up it’s something you always dream of doing and uh it was really cool to to do in person you like that over the right huh I think I give Jack a hug off the handshake pal real honor to win this tournament the much coveted handshake of congratulations from Jack Nicholas it wasn’t pretty to finally win here greet Jack Nicholas for that handshake coming off the 72nd hole on Sunday especially with you know Mr Nicholas I think a handshake would be appropriate but it’s like dancing uh he he’ll take the lead and I’ll just follow I you know what this was yep yeah I thought this is one of the greatest shots I’ve ever seen [Music] well tiger played mirfield really well he came back and he won the mirfield the last time and I think he had 52 of 54 Fairways that week but Tiger has played some unbelievable shots in Bearfield no way oh my gosh holy pitches behind 14 holy pitch behind 16 you J in more around here than anybody I [Laughter] know 16 205 yds got an IR down win 66 guys have played this hole 10 guys have hit the green 10 it’s downwind and I can’t believe it put the flag over there I was in the tower I was commenting with s Jack Nicholas was sitting right here I had a chance to try to describe it and I had Jack watching it tiger today is going for win number 73 and you’ve seen a lot of great shots through the years of your tournament and that one’s got to be on the short list that’s that’s a really tough shot to keep it out of the water to start with he’s got to just barely drop the ball up there on the on the greener on The Fringe and then just trickle over the top of the Ridge and see what happens look atot look might go he landed the ball perfectly On The Fringe the ball softly ran down the slope and and just trickled right in the hole it is it that was one of the most incredible golf shots I think you’ll ever see was one of the best shots out of the circumstance that I’ve ever seen in the game he needed a shot like that that was a shot that that propelled him to his win when he pull off these heroic Feats it was Jack to off camera you don’t see it you’re not even hearing but yes he was loving every minute of it that’s a touch of class of course win mirfield five times we’re proud to have tiger win it five times he you know he played it better than anybody else and they he deserved it I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better one that was the most unbelievable gutsy shot that I’ve ever seen what a [Applause] touch well I’m emotional with all the guys Victory I think for me to see anybody win that tournament see how happy they are is emotional for me [Music] he’s played pretty well around mirfield evidently I’m must have helped him I don’t know Patrick came to me uh before the first year he won and he says you know I love playing mirfield he said but I don’t know how to play it so we sat down and had lunch he says could you help me in how to play the golf course and I think sure Patrick I’d be happy to having his words in my head coming down the stretch and being able to close like that it’s a lot of good feelings I was a pretty serious guy and I sort of all of a sudden would stop look around me look at the gallery sort of take a deep breath and say sh boy isn’t this fun this is why I’m here and it would relax me and allow me to finish the round in comfort and not under stress I’ve talked to Patrick several times about that it wouldn’t hurt to flash a little bit of a smile or something every once in a while that’s the first smile I think I’ve ever seen on his face yeah coming down to golf course that’s good I like that I couldn’t help him with that shot he hit that all all by himself for the closeness the blessing and the way he views it the friendship he has with Jack Nicholas this is about as special as it gets you did it I [Applause] finished thanks for everything my eyes you should I think yeah that means a lot I told him how I’d play the golf course she went out and won it and then won it again kley is a student of the game and he he listened and he used what I told him and I’m very flattered by that i’ pretty special to give a guy some some advice and he uses it and wins the golf tournament it makes you feel pretty [Applause] good anything you do with your family is special and mirfield has been a Family Affair he always was a Visionary and he just wanted to give something back which is what he always does the Memorial tournament from day one has supported Nationwide Children’s Hospital I’ve been chairman of the event for now over 20 years and to be able to watch the Memorial tournament grow is such an honor for me it’s a flag that I’m very privileged and honored to carry for my mom and dad to have them still involved is very special it’s fun it’s rewarding here I’m I’m 84 years old and I still love going out and doing that [Music]

Muirfield is a place I'd love to go. It's on my short-list of places like Augusta, Pebble, Pinehurst 2, Pine Valley, Cypress Point, Riviera, Winged Foot…
His reaction to my shots: looks awkwardly to the camera
Gotta love The Golden Bear.
Jack is no goat. That's too disrespectful. Jack is the greatest PGA golfer of all time. Hands down. Was Tiger better? It's up to you. But Tiger is simply not the best PGA player of all time. That's the crown Jack wears. Seeing him and Barbara and all of the other champions so young is awesome. Jacks tournament!! Bring it!!
Nice
Yes Sir
I love how Jack seems happier watching other golfers win than when he watched his own film of his wins. Says a lot about him as a person.
Jack is the definition of class. Great golfer. Great person.
I wish I could like this more than once.
Cantlay only won because Rahm got hosed on the stupid Fauci Flu test. Eldricks chip in's aren't as impressive as Bryson mammoth tee shots. Anyone can chip in, but hardly anyone can hit one 450 on the first hole.
The sentiment captured in this video is so powerful. I wish this man nothing but happiness.
Never stop Jack.❤
What memories!
Didn’t see any of Bryson or Rahm’s wins there…
The funny thing about golf is that if the goal was a little endzone past the hole, and the hole in the ground was an obstacle, then our putts would somehow always find the hole.
To see both Patrick and Jordon play at the 2011 Walker Cup at Royal Aberdeen was a real treat. I truly thought Patrick would win earlier than he did on tour, all credit to him for his peservance and patient attitude.
Wonderful video this. ❣️
Jack supports Trump. Not good
there will never be another Jack.. Period!
What about Tom Lehman’s record at Muirfield. Where Jack said: “he played a game which I am not familiar with “. Should have been included, my thought. Great video.
Jack nicklaus!!!!!!! Pure class…..
Payne couldn't win wearing the Cleveland Browns outfit 😊
The memorial should become the 5th Major, in honour of Jack.
Great video
Here's an idea, how about we move the US Open or let perhaps the greatest player of all time pick the week he wants for the Memorial tournament. There are only two goats on my farm. Names are Jack and Tiger! Lets Go!
Jack is the GOAT, unquestioned. Tiger second.
Trump want to destroy us and this country. We will be better then him.
