Rory McIlroy reacts after his opening round at THE PLAYERS Championship 2026, revealing he had almost no preparation because of his back issue. McIlroy explains where he felt discomfort, why he felt “unbelievably rusty,” and why he still believes a good round on Friday can put him right back in the mix at TPC Sawgrass.

  1. The beginning of the end. Golf is a terrible game for the spine. Going to the gym doesn't stop the discs grinding from side bend and torsion. Unless you remove back movement from your swing (good luck with that) you will face the reality of reduced disc height, herniations and nerve issues. It doesn't go away. Tiger spent millions on it and all he did with fusion was to shift the failure up from L5 to L4.
As someone with two lower back herniations I can say it's the end. I believe gym work is diminishing in returns and even can accelerate spinal disease if done even slightly wrong.
History is packed with golfers who never recovered to their previous heights.
