Martin Kaymer CONFIRMS Major LIV Golf Move & Unexpected Ryder Cup Twist
The conclusion of the 2025 season marks a defining moment for LIIV Golf, one that could shape the league’s future direction. Many of the original player contracts signed during its explosive launch 3 years ago are nearing expiration, ushering in another critical stage in the Saudibacked League short but turbulent history. With no concrete progress on a potential alliance with the PGA Tour or DP World Tour, questions continue to swirl around whether the Saudi Public Investment Fund, PF, LIIV’s financial powerhouse, will be willing to reinvest heavily in fresh contracts to retain star players. That uncertainty, however, doesn’t seem to have dampened the resolve of many players. At the Hong Kong Open, where half of the LIIB roster is competing in pursuit of Masters and Open Championship spots, the talk among players and insiders is clear. Those whose contracts are expiring are eager to renew their deals and reaffirm their commitment to the LIIV Project point. One of those players is Martin K. Mayor, the two-time major champion and captain of the Clicks GC team. Though his encourse performances have been underwhelming, just three top, 10 finishes across his four years in the league, Kare has still earned more than $8 million in prize money since joining LIV. I think most of the contracts are up right now and we’re in the process of it. Kare told Bunker Co., “I plan to keep playing on LIV for at least the next 5 years. That’s my goal and my hope. But of course, it’s tough to get a 5-year deal at this stage. I’m 40 years old and I need something that makes sense for me. When you’re in your 50s, it’s unrealistic to expect a three or a 5-year playing contract given the competition level, but we’re working through it. Most of the guys who joined LIV early on are now renegotiating their contracts. Kare also confirmed that his focus extends beyond just his own deal. He’s currently searching for a new clicks GC teammate to replace Frederick Jetrop who was relegated this season. To make the right choice, Kare has enlisted the help of a Finnish analytics company to evaluate potential recruits using performance data and statistical modeling. We have around 10 to 15 names we’re analyzing. Kare revealed there’s mutual interest between some of them and us. Now, we’re digging into the stats, building a leaderboard to see who stands out the most from a performance standpoint. From there, we’ll narrow it down, but it’s still early in the process. As for rekindling his career on the DP World Tour, the German star admits that it’s not a current priority. Although he hasn’t ruled out an eventual comeback, he insists that he’ll only return when he’s confident in his form and ideally when he has a genuine shot at making the European Rder Cup team again. I’m not going to pick up my European Tour card next year, he stated. Maybe in 2027, that’s a Ryder Cup year. If I feel I can contribute and actually qualify for the team, then I’ll come back. Otherwise, I’ll stay with LIIV. I still have exemptions for 6, 7, maybe 8 years because of what I achieved earlier in my career. That gives me the flexibility to wait until I truly feel ready to compete again at that level. However, even if Kare were interested in helping Team Europe in a leadership role, he would be barred under a DP World Tour regulation that has existed since 2018, long before the LIV era began. The rule stipulates that any player who has relinquished their DP World Tour membership in a given season cannot serve as captain or vice captain of the Rder Cup team. For now then, Kr’s focus remains firmly on LIIB Golf, both as a player and a team leader navigating this period of transition. While the league’s broader future remains uncertain, one thing is clear. Its original pioneers like Karee are determined to continue shaping its next chapter.
