At the top of my back swing, I like to feel that I stay closed halfway down. So, basically, I’m feeling like my left arm is dropping down my chest as I stay closed to the target. That does a couple of things for me. It helps my rhythm. It keeps me very patient off the top of the back swing and also helps me keep a little bit of lag and a little bit of angle as I come down into the ball. One of my faults is when I get a little bit quick and I unwind too early. And when that happens, I have to hit the brakes essentially and wait for the club to fall into the hitting zone and hence I have to time impact so much more and I end up actually losing the face through impact. But when I make this move, I really wait for it now. I put myself in a position where I have to turn very aggressively through impact. So I can pivot much faster, much harder, much more powerfully. And that actually stabilizes the face through the hitting area.

  1. this was the most important thing for me i couldnt hit my irons at all before then i took lesson and this is what i was told i needed to do and now im hitting them better then i ever have

  2. Rosey, living Ryder Cup Legend! Ole Ole Ole Ole! Very recognizable to feel the face that way. I still have to master the aggressive pivot bit at the end

  3. Justin, this move was essential for me, I was turning to fast as you indicated causing me to do more timing in my swing. Now when I come across my chest with my left arm I feel more connected and I can release that stored up energy all together and it certainly gets ride of that sometime left chicken wing. Now I am hitting the ball more consistently, better compression and impact. I also realized that I could not hold on to tight, when I loosened up the grip I was able to get more club head speed. Thank you for sharing this video.

  4. If you start everything from the feet up rather than the shoulders down you will achieve that same closed feeling in your shoulders automatically.
From the address position make sure you have 'soft knees', bounce slightly and feel the weight into the right side. As that weight shift occurs lift the right hip. The lift is important as it will stop you from swaying to the right and keep you centred. As your shoulders, arms and hands move together to a point opposite the right hip it's now, and only now, time to move the hands and arms independently upwards by rotating the forearms up to the top of the swing.
Now, at the top, don't move the shoulders, arms, or hands. Dip those knees slightly and feel the transfer of weight into the left foot. Now, keep those shoulders quiet and lift the left hip. This clears the left side and automatically drops the right shoulder, arm and hands, still fully loaded, into that position you struggle to achieve, without any conscious effort on your part, and you can then release to play the desired shot by rotating the forearms, this time in an anti-clockwise direction.
Provided you don't move your top half – your shoulders, arms and hands – independently to start the downswing, you cannot come 'over the top' on the downswing guaranteed. 😊

  5. I use the same feel of having my shoulders closed as long as possible but if I don’t shift my weight and clear my left hip (stall out) I end up in a backward tilt, so I also use it as a reminder to shift and turn! It’s a great pre-shot drill.
