DEBATE: Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus? Hal Sutton Weighs In

You got to play against two of the best that have ever done it and Jack Nicholas and Tiger Woods. Not many people have been able to go head-to-head with them like you have. If I was going to ask you to break it down like the difference between Jack Nicholas and Tiger Woods, what would you say? Well, I mean, we’re talking about two different eras here. Uh, you know, they both managed their ball incredible. They were both one of the longest players of their time. uh big drivers, both of them. Uh great long iron players, uh middle iron, short irons. I mean, probably, you know, Jack, uh I would say Jack’s pitching the ball and chipping the ball weren’t in Tigers league. I I’m just being honest. Uh he hit the shot when he needed to, but what Jack did so well is he played into his strengths and away from his weaknesses. Tiger did that as well, but you know, Tiger was he was fearless. Uh I I’m not sure that he uh uh would lay up as much as Jack did. You know, Jack was an unbelievable 3-wood player. 3-wood’s not even in the game anymore, you know, and I I’ve done a little bit of designing, you know, and I’ve worked with a couple of guys and, you know, 3-wood’s not in the game. They don’t you they don’t have shots where you use 3-woods anymore. And Jack used three woods all the time for a thing called position. Nobody thinks about position anymore much off the tea. Yeah, it’s it’s become pretty one-dimensional. Just hit it as hard as you can and go find it. But staying on the Tiger Jack thing here for a minute, how like the two biggest wins or two of the biggest wins in your career. You held off Jack at the PGA at Riv and then you got the best of Tiger Woods at the players headtohead with him. Do either of those wins carry more weight to you than the other? Uh, I get asked this question all the time. Not really. You know, when I beat uh Jack early on, uh uh you know, he was my idol. So to do that as a young boy growing up, you know, I watched him on TV and I tried to uh emulate everything that he did. You know, my dad used to say we’d watch him on TV and he’d say, “If that’s good enough for Jack Nicholas, that’s good enough for Hal Sutton.” And uh so to beat him was a dream come true. And then Tiger in 2000, everybody was beginning to think that he couldn’t be beat. And uh you know at TPC, his distance wasn’t the factor uh that it could have been somewhere else. So I felt like I had him on a place that was point A to point B to point C. And at the time in 2000, I was doing that as well as anybody. So I wasn’t fearful of Tiger. You know, I felt like we’ll figure this out tomorrow. You know, I’ll tell you this about Tiger. If I The one thing I always say about Tiger, he’s the only guy that I ever played golf with that did not fear where the ball was fixing to go. He knew he had the next shot. And he’s the only guy I ever saw play that way. You know, everybody else, they knew what their strengths were. They knew what their weaknesses were. And they were like Jack played into their strengths and away from their weaknesses. They got into a spot where their weakness they had to show their showcase their weakness. They didn’t intend to be there. They did something wrong to get there.

Hal Sutton’s two most impactful victories came in head-to-head duels against golf’s greatest: Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. In this clip, Sutton reflects on those battles, breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of both legends and sharing his thoughts on who was tougher to beat.

  1. Tiger was an artist out there could hit any shot and impossible shots at times..but also he wasnt scared to hit those shots…he went for it which what made him even greater and why ppl loved his game so much…no fear lets go get it i came here to win not to no lose

  2. Not difficult, Jack is the greatest golfer ever. Tiger has played the greatest golf ever. Both things can be true

  3. Jack supports Donald Trump. This means he is a complete piece of dog feces. Jack said that Taco Tits McCankle was the best candidate, so that makes him an imbecile also. I don't care how good his golf game anymore. Doesn't matter to me or my family.

  4. Flaherty said that about TW. He followed him one tournament when his driver was off and said he’d never seen so many pars made from the most insane places off the fairway.

  5. Tiger was used to playing from the trees. Every time I looked back from the greens in the ‘94 Western, he was in the trees.
He went on to win, of course.

  6. Jack mostly played in an era where there were about 5 others guys who on a routine basis good win Slams – Tiger played in an era where there were more than a dozen guys who could win a Slam. Fat Jack in no way is Tiger's equal!!!

  7. Everyone knows Jack won 18 majors. What most don’t realize is he also had 19 second place finishes. 37 top 2s in majors ends the GOAT discussion.

  8. My dad was at a tournament in Tucson once and he talked to one of the caddies and he asked about Tiger, what it was about him that made him who he was and the caddie said, "he just wears guys down, he will end up in the trees off the tee and your guy will be middle of the fairway and next thing you know Tiger hits a shot out of the trees and lands it four feet or so from the pin, it just wears guys down"………..thats what he told my father.

  9. Why does it always come down to Jack vs Tiger? Forgetting the past at all? It's always said, compare them to their peers since you can't compare eras. Which is very true but not the entirety. I can throw names out like Jones, Snead, Sarazen, Hagen but for some reason they're never in discussion of best ever, Jones in particular. Any chess fans here? He's the equivalent to Paul Morphy, look him up if you have to.

  10. Anybody that thinks Jack Nicholas is better than tiger is delusional, the golden bear was the best in his era Tiger Woods is the best to ever play.

  11. I would say Nicklaus, obviously, for GOAT as prolific winner. However, I judge greatness on a different plane. That is to say, the entire package, the sum of how someone's overall legacy is perceived. Hitherto, for many, Sevy is the overall goat. As is Alex Higgins in snooker. In the club house, more people's ears, and hairs on the back of their neck, still prick up when you mention Seve's name. Likewise with Alex Higgins in the snooker halls. Now, THAT is surely the measure of longevity, legacy, greatness and legend.

  12. I grew up watching tiger but also watched a lot of nicklaus highlights. Its interesting to ponder what would have happened had they gone head to head for 10 years.

  13. THIS IS LIKE ASKING TRUMP ABOUT EPSTEIN….. it's always going to be Jack from Hal Sutton, no matter what…..this debate is stupid too. it's the MJ vs Bron…… except mike was jack and tiger combined…. hal sutton is tom chambers.

tiger is the greatest golfer, all around golfer. jack managed to win the most majors. neither were better than hogan at hitting the golf ball. golf is a weird game, and back up quarterbacks still get rings etc…. i hate this championship or else debates in sports.. Robert horry is better than barkley because he got 5 rings? no.

  14. Fear where the ball went? Golf is not a crap shoot. A pro golfer knows where their ball is going. The ones that don't are immature and hitting the ball as far as they can and allowing fate to dictate where they hit the next shot from. A true pro golfer determines where they hit the next shot from.

  15. 1998 Masters – A 58 year old Nicklaus beat a 22 year old Woods (who already had proven himself the year before)….That shouldn't happen….Woods is to Mahomes as Nicklaus is to Brady….therefore Nicklaus is the GOAT, but Woods is in the conversation! Hopefully Scheffler stays hungry long term and eclipses both of them…the potential is there!

  16. Unfortunately, we'll never know! But for those who say Jack is way better or Tiger is way better is BS. Hence the never-ending debate. Jack is the better person (character), but it's not determinable who is the better golfer. Arguments for both.
