The origins of Mont Saint-Michel are tied to a legendary divine vision.

Who made it? The initial religious sanctuary was built by Saint Aubert, the bishop of Avranches. According to the legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to him in a dream three times in the year 708 AD, instructing him to build a church on the rocky islet, which was then known as Mont Tombe.

When was it made? The construction of the initial sanctuary began in 708 AD. However, the Mont Saint-Michel we see today is the result of centuries of construction, reconstruction, and expansion. A community of Benedictine monks was installed on the island in 966 AD, and they began building the first abbey church. Throughout the Middle Ages, different sections were added, including the magnificent Gothic “Merveille” (The Marvel) in the 13th century.

Why? The primary purpose was religious. It was built as a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael, who was seen as the “weigher of souls” and a powerful protector. Over time, it grew into a major pilgrimage site, attracting countless believers from across Europe who sought protection and spiritual salvation. Its strategic, naturally fortified position also made it an important fortress and symbol of French resistance, as it was never captured by the English during the Hundred Years’ War.

Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island commune in Normandy, France, famous for its medieval abbey.
It becomes a true island only at high tide. The Mont is connected to the mainland by a causeway, but during exceptionally high tides, the water completely surrounds it, cutting it off for a few hours. This natural defense made it a formidable fortress throughout history.
It was never conquered by the English during the Hundred Years’ War, despite a 30-year siege. Its natural defenses and strong fortifications held firm.
The structure itself is a symbol of feudal society. The abbey and monastery sit at the very top, representing God and the clergy. Below that are the great halls for the nobility, and even further down, the houses of the merchants and, at the bottom, the fishermen and farmers.
