THE FRIDAY SHOW: Scott and Adam breakdown Yankees Jays and talk pitching matchups

Hello and welcome to the walk-off everybody. This is the Friday show. I am Scott Belelfford joined by the best co-host in the biz, Adam Mack, and we have all sorts of wonderful playoff baseball to talk here today. Uh, obviously yesterday the Red Sox and the Yankees closed up their series. And Adam, New York, New York, did you have I thought I I got I got a text from my buddy Brian after the Red Sox won game one of like who would you rather and I didn’t think I thought the Red Sox were going to take that series. It just felt like the Red Sox were going to have one of those special years. So, I don’t know. I kind of the way I summed it up was I’d rather beat the Yankees. Yes, obviously. But if we’re going to lose, I’d rather lose to the Red Sox, right? Which is such a loser mentality. I’m in the same boat. Yes. Yeah. So, so I was like, give me the Red Sox cuz I I still don’t have a whole lot of faith in this team just cuz like no bow. The pitching is kind of a mess. I don’t even know who’s healthy anymore. or like I can’t keep track of. I will say this together. I think that when it comes to the defensive end of the game, the Blue Jays are night and day better than the New York Yankees. I think that their contact rate and ability to not strike out is night and day better than the Yankees. And I think that even when it comes to the power bat, the Yankees obviously have the edge there, but the Blue Jays have been hitting their bombs when they needed it in the last week of the season. I know that there is question marks in the bullpen starting pitching. How does it line up? I mean, this is all going to unfold in front of us tomorrow morning. So, we just kind of need to hold tight and we’ll know all the answers. But, in the meantime, we’re going to talk it. We’re going to dive into this. We’re going to talk the Cubs and Milwaukee series. Dodgers versus Phillies is how the rest of baseball kind of breaks down. And of course, Seattle versus Detroit. Interesting division series. Like, this is not exactly how I would have imagined it come even midseason, I think, had you told me that that it’s going to be the the battle of the Juggernauts is going to be Milwaukee versus Chicago and the Dodgers versus the Phillies, I’d be like, “How did this all break down? Where are the Mets in this? The Mets didn’t make the playoffs. What? Like, you know, I love baseball for all of this. Like, it’s so difficult to predict sometimes how things will unfold, but uh pretty cool. We’ll talk how uh tomorrow’s going to shape up for the Jays, if there’s any possible surprise ads. I know. I went to uh the scrub game they had yesterday at Rogers Center. Kind of a six inning just stay sharp kind of scrimmage. It was interesting to see. There was some stuff that I was like, uh, we will dive into. Jan Brown is actually the big one that I wanted to kind of pick your brain on because uh we’ve seen the whole Cam Eden of it before back in 2023. And I I do wonder if there is a a part of this Jay’s front office that is like, you know what, having the fastest guy in the system on this playoff roster might not be a bad idea. It would be a wild move, but with Bo not I mean again they’re not they’re keeping their lips sealed on Bo, but I mean if he’s not running and he’s barely swinging like I what are we what are we talking here? So it does feel like he’s out unless the Dan Brown play is is a a pinch run for B combo. Right. Right. Exactly. you know, like, hey, let’s just get Bo in the batters box. If he gets on, immediately pull him and put Desan Brown in. And I hate to ask this question. One of one of our talking points is going to be, can the Jays win a division series without Bo? And uh it’s going to be an uphill climb. And then finally, we’re going to look ahead at just how the series work, you know, because I know I was getting messages from a bunch of my buddies who are Blue Jays fans when they’re winning is kind of the best way to put it. They follow baseball close enough. They know the rules. Also known as Leafs fans. Leafs fans, the casuals, if you will. And I I love it. I I say the bandwagon is open to anyone. Get on board, Canada. This is going to be a very fun week. And I mean, we are up against, I think, the Blue Jays biggest rival in the Yankees. And the Yankees may even agree with that. I know that after the Red Sox uh got eliminated yesterday at Yankee Stadium, the fans did start screaming out, “Fuck the Blue Jays.” Which, you know, classy as always. Classy always have batteries to throw on the field. Yeah. Throw a couple batteries at a few faces and call it a day in New York. But we we will uh we will talk about just how these series shape up for all everyone who is uh curious how the division series breaks down and and so on and so forth. Let’s start with the fact that this Blue Jays and Yankees series is going to be in my opinion a long one. I think this is going to go the distance. I do feel like this is probably going to take all five games to be decided. A few things that stood out to me. Listen, a lot of people say you can just wash the regular season aside. None of this matters. Then there are there are others, including players I’ve heard say that you know what, yes, you do that, but it does matter a little bit if it starts to be really lopsided. So, the Blue Jays were eight and five against the Yankees. Yankees starting pitching probably has the edge over the Blue Jays. But I will say this, the Toronto Blue Jays have hit them hard this year. 111 innings. They have pitched against the Yankees in 2025. The Yankees have put up a 5.95 ERA. So they give up runs against the Blue Jays. And we watched their lack of defensive ability be a problem in that Canada Day fourame sweep where the Blue Jays took the lead of the division and never gave it up. The Blue Jays have the top batting average in baseball. They have the top on base percentage in baseball. The Yankees, on the other hand, are number one in home runs and number one in OPS. So, it’s a little bit of thump versus contact here. Drop your comments. Grounds crew, where are you at on this Yankees versus the Blue Jays series? Would love some predictions. On top of that, would love your feeling on just how these weaknesses versus strengths kind of play out long run here. I know that uh the Jays have a few options when it comes to their pitching. I think it’s pretty obvious Kevin Gosman goes game one. Like Adam, you just run him right back out there despite his mediocre start in game 162, right? Yeah. I mean, if for nothing else, I don’t think we have a better option. Yeah. Yeah. And outside of those three innings against the Rays in game 162, Kevin Gosman was literally the best pitcher in the American League. And numbers-wise, RA and whip uh right up there. I think he’s number two in all of baseball in September. So, his Ks for nine are up compared to the rest of the season in September. So he came in hot. He’s coming in hot. You love to see it. Hopefully that wy veteran 35year-old that he is right now in his career can take a look at that three innings in game 162 and just hit that flusher and just not even worry about it. This is a fivegame series over seven days. We have two off days. That helps, right? Yeah. Yeah. We probably have Gossip in game one. And then it gets interesting, Adam, because I don’t say that already. That’s such a scary time to already say and then it gets interesting. It It’s I know it is. I know it is. But you do have to wonder. It’s like, do you listen, I So, the way the division series breaks down, I was going to explain this all in the end, but it doesn’t matter. We’ll we’ll just jump in and do it here. It’s going to go two, two, and one. So, two games in Toronto, two games in New York, and then game five if necessary in Toronto. There’s a lot of talk that maybe Wonder Kid [ __ ] Trey Savage winds up going in game two for a few reasons, and I I will throw this to you, Adam. Would you prefer to see this young man who has made the jump five times to different levels in 2025, made his major league debut, got his first win, and literally was thrown into the heat of a pennet race and succeeded? Would you rather this kid get his first start game two in Toronto in front of a hometown crowd or would you put him game three and let him deal with what Yankee Stadium is going to be? Or do you feel better about a little bit more veteran presence Shane Bieber going game three on the road in a playoff position that he has already faced? I think I would lean. Okay. So, whoever starts game two is also probably starting game five. Yeah, it’s it’s it’s going to be interesting to see it. It is regular rest for Gossman to go game game four. Correct. Yeah. Um, well, or might be short. Might be one day short. So, I do you do you bring Basset into this? I don’t I don’t want to do a fiveman rotation for or a fourman rotation. I I don’t know. Basset I’d rather. It really wasn’t even a consideration for me, Scott. Yeah. Um, so yeah, for me it was game one Gossman and then either two or three was a a Bieber Savage game. Game four is Gossman again and then game five is whoever started game two. Yeah. So, but I guess maybe it I don’t know how I mean I guess it depends in the series. Does it matter to you if game four the Jays are up or down? Like I’m almost more prepared to go Gauzeman on short rest if they’re on the verge of elimination. Well, like for sure that is one thing. Um, but I think I go Gossman in game four no matter what. So, hear me out. Okay. Okay. Um, first of all, Basset home road splits have been atrocious. Mhm. Right. Does not He pitches great at Rogers. Does not pitch very well at all on the road. I don’t know the numbers in front of me, but I just remember that there it was a stark stark contrast. So, he’s not pitching game one or two in Toronto, that’s for sure. So, I don’t want him pitching game four whether we are up 2-1 in the series or down 2-1. Definitely don’t want him in if we’re down 2-1. Mhm. But if we’re up to one and we have a chance to close it out in New York, I don’t want to mess around Bastard out there for a loss and say, “Well, at least we still have Gossipin for game five because and not to get ahead of ourselves, but you do have to think of the playoffs as an entity, right? Is that it? It would be nice to have Gossman for game one of the next series, would it not?” Of course. So if we can end it in four, like that’s just substantially much better than ending it in five. So yeah, for me it’s Gossman in game one and four, I guess, kind of regardless of what the the series is at. I mean, if we’re up three nothing or we’re down three nothing and the series is over, then who cares? But do you think putting Trey Savage Do you think putting Trey Savage game two is overthinking it? Do you think you just run your top pitchers out in order? And do you think Trey Savage is the number two pitcher in this? That’s tough to say. That’s where his Yeah, I mean the sample size is so small. Bieber is got the pedigree but also coming off coming off John. So he’s not in peak performance. He did start in the in squad game yesterday, which I don’t think matters. I think that kind of lines up with where his bullpen session would have landed anyways, and he only pitched two innings. So, I do think that, you know, this is more along the lines of just regular routine. I don’t think it means anything. Although Max Scherer going five innings yesterday was an interesting wrinkle in the whole how does this starting pitching and even bullpen lineup. Do you even do you put Max Sherzer in the bullpen? Yeah. I mean there’s just so many aspects to that question. Like I’m I’m so much less interested in answering it and having the conversation. Like sorry for like a podcast content, but I am just I am really looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Yes. and how John Schneider well I mean through the orders of the higherups uh implements that and if there is I mean there are just like crazy scenarios where you go Sherzer is our guy but you Savage is the opener right like we’re going to give you Savage the first three innings or whatever and then Sherzer’s going to come in and now it’s like not even a bullpen day maybe right or I I got to order that you do the opposite of that and you go Sherzer’s coming out for three and then you Savage is going to try and run with it from there. Right. The piggyback of it all intrigues the [ __ ] out of me cuz I’m like how you know the analytics department in the Blue Jays is the busiest overthinking it right now. They are all in there with their their data Rubik’s cubes trying to put together. Well, then here’s here’s the other aspect of this too, right? is when push comes to shove John Schneider manager of the year candidate. Am I is that I think the only one who’s even close as Steven vote of the Guardians because of that insane September they put together. Right. So does he have the balls to pull Bereos when it when dealing I Well, here’s what I’m saying is Okay. So explain that context for the listener who maybe didn’t follow previous playoff seasons. Explain what happened because this this is exactly where I’m going with this. So what happened with Bereio? Was it two three years ago in 2023 against the Twins in the wildard series down one game to nothing. Jos Bereios comes out and shoves for three innings. One hit, no runs. just looked like one of his more dominant starts of the year. And they pulled him to go to Use Kikuchi, a lefty because David Popkins was the hitting coach at the time with the Minnesota Twins and had really the Twins were really, really good at platooning guys back and forth. So, by putting us Kikuchi in, they were forcing the Twins to go to their right-handed hitters or sorry, left-handed hitters early on in the game. And the truth is, and everyone has a different opinion on this, it worked. The Blue Jays lost that game two nothing. So, it’s hard to say it didn’t work when they don’t score any runs. That said, and I know Whit Maryfield actually came out recently and said this on the sixth inning podcast, uh, sixth inning stretch there with Lindsay Dunn and him that he feels it was a momentum shifter and changed the entire stream of the game. Well, I mean, it was it’s it’s okay. So, first of all, the big asterisk of hindsight is 2020 and the armchair quarterback of it all. And it is so much easier to say, “Oh, shouldn’t have done that because it didn’t work out.” I get all that, right? But we do, and there’s a confirmation bias to it. We see it time after time. Blake Snell is dealing for the Rays in the sixth. And then the game script that was decided before the game started, like before the first pitch was thrown, game script said he comes out at this point. And then you get to that point and despite him having maybe the best performance of his career, you follow the game script and then like what Maryfield had said from the Jay’s perspective, it felt like a momentum shift, right? Yeah. And Mookie Bets said the same thing on the Dodger side of like we couldn’t hit this guy. So seeing him come out of the game was like, oh [ __ ] now we have a chance. Right. So like that stuff is real. And in the postseason more than ever, I have goosebumps thinking about this Scott. Yeah. about just like the emotional side of things and like momentum being such a it’s an intangible but it’s almost tangible. It’s so like such a real factor. Absolutely. Baseball is such an upear game. So all this to say John Schneider was the man at the helm for that decision to pull Bereos in 2023. So, what I’m saying is all of these interesting split khaki decisions of, you know, opener with a a long man in the middle or vice versa or whatever. Like when he gets the call down in game two, right? Jay’s win game one. Game two. Okay, we’re going. Let’s just say Max Scherzer is going to get the first three innings and then Y Savage is piggybacking on that. Let’s just say that’s what the script was. But Sherzer comes out, throws eight strikeouts through nine batters. It’s just it’s it’s vintage. Vintage Max. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Like we’re just we’re seeing something that this exactly why we signed him is it could be the opposite or it could be a Savage who’s doing the same thing, right? But does John Schneider have that in him to to just hang up the phone when the when the call comes down? You know what I mean? That’s what I’m wanting to see is like when when Buck and Shman are saying, you know, on the broadcast like, okay, like this is probably the time that we’re going to see a change get made, like maybe gets this other batter and then when the lefty comes up, you know, or whatever the case may be, right? Whatever the circumstances are. And they’re starting to hint it cuz of course they know they’re in on it, right? Even though they pretend they’re not, they’re in on it. And then Schneider doesn’t go out for the change, right? Like, does that happen or do we see a repeat of 2023 where it’s like, “Oh, why are we pulling them now? Like, grow some ball. We’re going to be [ __ ] screaming at our TVs.” I wonder because here’s the thing, and I I mean, I guess it depends on how you view this. It took huge balls to pull Jose Burios while dealing. Now, is he just kneeling to the front office here, which would definitely make it feel like there’s less balls involved, right? Still a very uh a lot of gumption in that move from the front office, even from the analytics department. There’s a lot of like uh you know, guts, I guess. Is Okay. You know, I got to push back on this cuz I don’t think I’ve ever in the history of sports ever even heard of anyone in the khakis department losing their job because of a calculation decision like that. And you may be correct. I know that the the whole idea is it gutsy if there’s no job risk like no one in the analytics department is like okay we got to pull Bieber here in the fourth inning because he’s he’s whatever nobody’s losing their job over that decision. Yeah. Whereas John Schneider if he disobys and if he disobys and gets it wrong he loses his job probably. If he disobys and gets it right they’re not going to like it though. But yeah, you know, so I don’t know. Drop your comments, everybody. Where are you at on this? I’m [ __ ] rooting for John Schneider, man. I hope I I want to see him do one of those decisions that we just like talk about for a long time of like, oh, that was a player’s manager right there, you know? Like he went out there and he let his guy go, you know? Yeah. I mean, so let’s while we’re in it, we’re talking pitching. We’re talking how this all lines up. We’re talking about some of the decisions that are going to be at the feet of John Schneider here. How do you How do you think that this position player roster lines up? There is. And again, I I don’t think there’s going to be any major surprises. In fact, I don’t think there’s going to be any surprises. I think that kind of the way we saw this line up at game 162 is probably most likely the way that this lines up. I know that uh there’s 28 players on the roster in September. So, there’s going to be two fewer. So, one fewer pitcher, one fewer position player. It’s probably Joey Lerido that is not in the lineup. We’ll see. There’s a lot of a lot of whatifs, question marks around that. Now, at the game yesterday, the intra squad game, Desan Brown played every inning, and this was a game where George Springer hit a hard ball to third base and there was zero hustle, right? Like all of these guys were like, I am not pulling a quad. I’m not pulling a hammy. I am taking my time. Uh Desan Brown on the other hand was playing like his head was on fire. He hit a triple. He pushed the limits when it came to uh stealing bases. I think he he nabbed a couple. He ran first to home. He ran through a stop sign. The guy was showcasing his speed and it was so obvious. Mhm. We watched the Blue Jays kind of step outside the box and take Cam Eden, a guy who was the fastest dude in the organization in 2023 on the playoff roster to Minnesota. He didn’t really get into the game. I think he pinch ran in game two and didn’t work out. We did watch Daltton Pompei kind of play that role in 2015. He’s still on third base in Kansas City or uh in Toronto here I guess is is how they lost that game six. Anyways, my question is, do you think there is a spot um within this 26-man roster for a speedster bench piece that is never going to get a at bat unless some reason basically everything goes wrong or everything goes right and he’s in the game in extra innings or something like that? Or do you think that they go with who, you know, like it would be his major league debut or do you think there’s enough speed on this roster as is that that they just kind of roll with a mile straw or something like that in that scenario and and don’t uh jump off the deep end here? Although Dan Brown is the fastest guy in this organization. That is a again these are questions I’m super fascinated to see the an like what the reality plays out to be. I would say my preference is if the situation is we’ve got 25 obvious yeses that are on on the roster and now we’re looking at man number 26 the last spot. And if in that situation it’s Don or it’s Bo and I know Bo’s not not healthy and like all signs are he’s probably not back like he’s probably not back for this series. Like I’d still rather have Bo as a guy that can pinch hit in the ninth say man it’s like who can pinch run in the ninth. Like give me give me Bo with runners on the corners and no outs where it’s like okay we can clear the bases here with a like with one swing of the bat. That’s just so much more and then [ __ ] once we get on base pull him and put Miles Straw on to run for him. I do wonder Adam if if he is healthy enough right like cuz I if can you can you put a wounded duck out on the pond there? Right. Like if he can swing like he normally swings, this is the guy that that is the question, right? If he can swing but he can’t field and can’t run, I’ll still take his bat. Can you in a scenario like that, can he get down to first well enough to to to not injure him more and get him out of the game? And is that worth having that wild card? Or is the wild card you’d rather have the pinch run defensive substitution that would be Dan Brown? Uh, grounds crew. Again, like both Adam and I, like we obviously have no hard feelings or opinions on this. I’m more just really intrigued how the front office does this and what the chess board looks like. Shoot him up full of whatever shots they were given Freddy Freeman last year is what I say. Like this is playoffs. This is put up or shut up. And this is, you know, like I don’t know. It’s easy for me to say. I’m not the guy, right? But like that’s what I want to see out of Bo is like I want Bo to be banging on John Schneider’s desk all day today saying [ __ ] put me in that [ __ ] lineup. I’m fine, right? Like whatever it needs to do. DHB me or like I don’t know. There’s part of me that, and this is kind of like the romance of sports of it all, is like, and I know Vlatty made a comment too about like, oh, like we just got to do our job and like get on to the next round so that Bo can help us out there. And I’m like, I wonder if this is all a little bit of like, yeah, gamesmanship of like, no, all of a sudden in the lineup, you were starting shortstop game one, right? And it’s just like like I mean talk about like the emotional uh vacuum of your pitcher gets pulled when he’s dealing right and like the opposite of that when you go [ __ ] one of our like captains of this team is [ __ ] balling out for us on one leg. Like if not now, when I guess is what it comes down to for me, right? It’s like very true. And I know this will never happen, but imagine a world where the Blue Jays of all teams throw defensive uh prowess to the wind and you see Vladimir Guerrero Jr. starting at third base with Santander at first and Springer in right field and Bo hitting DH like amazing. I mean, it would be wild. The thing is too is like what do you do with that DH spot if Bo is available and he can’t field? You got to have him in the lineup and if you have him in the lineup now where a guy is playing. Yeah. Yeah. I mean that would probably have to be it, right? Cuz he’s the DH and you [ __ ] shift everybody else around. But I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s it’s a [ __ ] I guess I guess you can’t I guess you can’t put You’re not putting Vlatty at third and who else would you? And like you said with Santandere and Springer, there’s only so many DH spots. So Santandere on your playoff roster. Yeah, probably. I mean, there’s not like he Yeah, like you do need a pinch hit bat option, right? Like you do need a a guy with the upside is there, right? You can’t get into the eighth inning and be like, “Okay, we got runners on second and third and [ __ ] sure could use two runs right now and then be pinch hitting Isaiah Kind or Falefa for Miles Straw.” Like he just, you know, would have loved to have seen a tater from Tony before the end of the season here after coming back. I know he hit a couple in Buffalo. Really, uh, an a major league home run would have sure been nice, but yeah. Uh, yeah, not in the cards. So, uh, for everyone who is wondering, by the way, uh, the the series are going to work like so. So, division series again, two in Toronto, two in New York, one back in Toronto if game five is needed. And then for the seven game series, which will be the ALCS and the NLCS, and then the World Series, it is going to go as such. Two to the home team, three to the road team, two to the home team. So 232. So the home team, you really want to win them both there and try and get one on the road to send it back if that’s how you’re you’re playing things in the ALCS and the World Series. So we’ve kind of discussed everything about Bo Bashette. Can this team win without him in the lineup? I do think they can. I think a fiveame series is better to have no bow than a sevename series. But boy oh boy do they ever need contributions. And I listen, they’ve got them most the season from their bluecollar kind of uh roleplaying guys. Can we expect Ernie Clement to pick up the slack a little bit? I don’t know if we can, but we kind of need it. Is David Schneider going to be hitting in the two-hole? Like how how does how does how does Babe Schneider fit into this roster? Well, I got my playoff Schneider mustache going right now. So, yes, you do. And you look great. I don’t know, man. And then and then we’ll we’ll wrap things up here with uh just talking what happened in the other division series and how these uh or sorry in the other wild card series and how these division series are are looking. The Chicago Cubs are people sleeping on them a bit here. Adam, it was interesting cuz I really thought the Padres’s were going to come out of that series and I know that it was in Chicago. It just didn’t happen. And I mean, the Cubs really showed up. Do they have it within them to beat the Milwaukee Brewers? Uh, battle of the NL Central here. The Milwaukee Brewers with the best record in all of baseball. very similarly built to the Toronto Blue Jays. Contact first, they don’t strike out. I don’t know. It’s I mean, this is why people have beef with the expanded playoffs, right? Is that doesn’t necessarily mean the best team makes it to the World Series, but I think that’s a a great thing. I think I mean, upsets happen. Yeah, the Cubs are a Cinderella team every once in a while. Yeah, I know. They’re not the Arizona Diamondbacks of two years ago. Um, yeah. Is everyone sleeping on the Cubs? I don’t know. I mean, if if they can get through the Brewers, like they have had quite a murderer’s row of a path through the playoffs, then like this is not a nothing has been handed to them. Yeah, this is not a wild card team kind of snuck into a Yeah. You know, sometimes like the Yankees Red Sox, I think the the four five seed was a tougher matchup than the 36 seed. Yeah. In the American League. Right. So, like sometimes you could be the six seed and you’re like, well, okay, that third division winner is actually a softer opponent than the the Red Sox and the and the Yankees would have been. But yeah, I don’t know. Brewers Cubs is I think going to be great ball, but I don’t know what the viewers are going to like it. It’s not it’s not the Dodgers Phillies. Listen, it’s not musty TV, right? Like and that’s one thing with the Brewers is like they’re not a national draw at all and the Cubs I mean are a historic team but they’re also not on the same level as as the Dodgers or the Phillies or the Yankees or anything. So I don’t know. It’ll be it’ll be a fun series to watch the recaps on. And I think that’s going to be one of those like I think small ball kind of series with like some some really fun sacrifice bunting and and some like crafty ways to score runs which again I think is delicious for a certain type of baseball fan but not for everyone most of like today’s typical baseball fan that wants to see home runs and I’m excited though power on power. I love that [ __ ] I really do love that like pitcher duel. And this is the other thing. We watched all these wild card games and they were all like you all of a sudden start to be like, “Oh yeah, you’ve got to win three, four, like four, three games. You’ve got to win three- two games.” Like this isn’t the there were a couple of highscoring games and they were mostly the Dodgers and the Reds. So um yeah, there are going to be some tight games played. Cubs with Milwaukee. Do you have a prediction? I, by the way, we’re not predict. I’m not anyways. I want nothing to do with predicting the Yankees and the Jays. They’re just Well, I’m keeping hands off of that one. Um, oh man, this is such a coin toss. It really is. I’m going to say I’m going to give the edge to the Cubs just because they’ve been playing, which again I’m not going to make any connections to the Yankees Jays situation, but I think in a small ball feisty matchup like that, I think time off hurts more than anything. I am going to go with Milwaukee, but I’m being biased as I just really like the Brewers this year. I normally like I mean we’ve talked about this on the plot numerous times. I I when it comes to NL teams, the Brewers probably I like the most of all the teams. They just go about their business the right way. And I I I hope that the rest over Rust stuff doesn’t play in too too much. But it is a fiveame series. So, that’s one of those things, right, where like if they do wind up losing a game just because of Rust before they are really back into things, like that’s a pretty big advantage in a fivegame series against against a very good Chicago Cubs team. Here’s here’s my prediction. Road team wins every game this series. Interesting. Cubs go up two nothing. They’ve got that rust on the Brewers working against them. Uh and then facing elimination, the Brewers now after having two hardfought losses claw their way back, tie the series up, and then the Cubs uh just give their heads a shake, take a nice cold shower, and Spartan up for game five to finish it off. Fun fun prediction. There you go. Uh Dodgers, Phillies. Obviously, the Dodgers uh steamrololled the Reds and then the Phillies wound up also sweeping um sweeping away. Hey, who did the Phillies play again? Why am I doing this? Phillies swept the This is not Oh, were Phillies a buy team? Oh, yeah. The Phillies were a buy team. Good shot. Wow. They won. Really overthinking this here, man. Way overthinking this. Way overthinking this. Of course, it was the Dodgers that Yeah. Okay. So, the Dodgers Phillies, the default in your brain is just that if the Dodgers didn’t have a buy, there’s no way the Phillies did. Yeah, exactly. So, the Dodgers obviously uh sweeping the Reds. This is kind of the battle of the Bohemoth series of all the series. Uh I’m leaning towards the Phillies, but Oh, yeah. I’m rooting for him for sure. Yeah. I mean, I I I do feel like the Phillies I I just don’t like the Dodgers, obviously. Not that I overly love the Phillies, but uh yeah, drop your comments, everybody. I I’m I’m leaning Phillies in this one. Yeah, I Phillies are so much more less evil empire than the Dodgers are right now. And uh Dodgers have been one of those teams. It’s been kind of like, well, the fact they didn’t have a buy in the first round, right? Like that’s kind of telltale of their of their season that they kind of hobbled their way through. But now like the more momentum they pick up in every series win that they get in the postseason, like if they can get to the World Series, they’re going to be a team that’s firing on all cylinders. And I mean, Cubs, Brewers, I don’t trust either of those guys to take out the Dodgers. Yeah, me neither. So I feel like Phillies Dodgers winner goes to the World Series. That is not a bold prediction. I’ll tell you that much. But uh so there you go. But you’re probably right. Let’s let’s wrap things up here. I know you got to go in a minute here. Uh Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers. I mean, as a Jays fan, I’m rooting for the Tigers. Oh, me too, buddy. Go Tigers. But I don’t think Go Tigers go. I don’t think so either. Mariners are as hot as it gets. And but a Jay’s Mariners matchup like for a Canadian baseball fan that’s as good as it gets. Pretty darn cool. It would be pretty darn cool. There’s going to be a I’m nervous about this Yankees series, but also you got to beat the best to be the best. And this team, they they finished with both of their they both finished tied for the division. The Jays had the tiebreaker. So, these are the two best teams in the American League going headtohead in the Division Series. I love it, man. It’s gonna be fun. This is what we all you can ask for all year long is that hopefully on October 3rd, you’ve got a rooting interest and the Jays gave us that. So, regardless of how it plays out, um this is kind of our, you know, kind of our World Series, right? is is just what whatever plays out. Even if it’s a unfortunate loss to the Yankees in this round, it’s we got meaningful ball in October and that’s that’s a treat. Go Blue Jays. Go.

  1. The thing about the game script is that if you know you are going 3 innings (9 outs, etc), you've got to believe that the starter is reaching back for all they've got (not needing to conserve energy to "eat innings" like in 162).

Thus leading to better short-term results and risking bad results if they are asked to do more.

  2. Thanks for the preview. As of 240 pm Friday still no word on roster that I find besides Gausenab game 1. I would prefer Bieber game 2 and figiure out the rest after that. They need to have Yesavage and Scherzer on the roster for depth at least. Same with Bo. Maybe Bo won't make it into game or two… but maybe by Tuesday he will be fine for DH in game 3-5.? Too bad Loperfido wasn't producing at the end the way he was in the summer. I'd take FRance over IKF… but both are depth anyway. Santander may not do well, but they will bring him in at some point… maybe late game pinch hits… WE will find out in 24 hours. Fans will go nuts if they win!

  3. Great to see Adam back! While I agree they might include a speedster to steal bases, I think it would be Jonatan Clase instead. Brown is fast, but Clase looks to have a bit of an edge stealing bases based on their minor league stats. Plus he's on the 40-man and at AAA. Great season. Let's hope for a deep run! Go Jays go.

  4. All these stats in the jays favor from the season series are almost irrelevant. All those games outside of the last series that the Yankees won, occurred during a stretch where the Yankees went 20 and 31. It’s when you play teams. Especially post deadline. New season come October. Should be great series

  5. in 1992 the WS MVP was pat borders. for the jays to win they will need the whole team to step up. and the key to the series may be some one you've never expected to see preform,

  6. Bassitt pitches to a sub 3.00 in 15+ career starts in NYC. He has been great against the Yankees since becoming a Jay and pitched really well in September. If Bassitt is healthy he is 100% the game 3 starter. This shouldn't even be a discussion. Gausman, Beiber, Bassitt, Yesavage once through the order and quick hook to Lauer and the pen. I think they carry 13 pitchers.

  7. Game 1 and Game 2 starters can start game 5 on regular rest . Game 4 will be short rest for both game 1 and 2 guys

    Id go
    Game 1 : Gausman
    Game 2 : Trey/ Lauer piggyback
    Off Day
    Game 3 : Bieber
Game 4 : Gausman short rest/ Lauer piggy back
    Off day
Game 5 : Bassit/ Trey piggy back at home

For 26 man – I don’t do wild cards . Joey Lopes and Max to taxi squad , keep the remaining 26.

  8. 16:40 – You said it correctly first. Putting Kikuchi in caused the Twins to pull three of their strong, home run bashing lefty hitters from their lineup. After the Blue Jays infielder bobbled the ball to keep the inning going and the Twins scored two runs, the Twins were unable to score any other runs for the rest of the game. The Twins batters that could've easily destroyed Yimi, Swanson, or Romano were gone.
The true narrative of that game is you can't win a game by scoring zero runs. The zeros in all nine innings on the scoreboard were the problem, not the two in the fourth inning for the Twins.
In any case, right or wrong, that was the Blue Jays analytics department flexing in this game. Berrios had put in a decent sample size of 32 regular season games with a 1.41 ERA during 3rd innings and a 5.34 ERA during 4th innings. That was too large of a jump to ignore. Our human minds are easily fooled by the Hot Hand Fallacy, but the cold emotionless analytics saw a red flag.
Run prevention overall that game was very good, limiting the Twins to two runs in just a single inning and shutting them out in all the others. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays analytics department had no answers to put a single run on a board, rendering the pitching change a moot point.
