Michelle Wi West, famed for her bold personality and quick playing style, has had enough of slow golf, and she isn’t holding back. Speaking on the We Need a Fourth podcast, the retired LPGA star used her trademark humor to call out her biggest pet peeves on the course, sending a clear message to casual golfers. Keep it fun, keep it fast, and keep it moving. When asked what ruins a casual round for her, we didn’t hesitate. Slow golfers, she said flatly. She explained that players who take too long over every shot kill the rhythm of the game and make it less enjoyable for everyone. Like, get out of here, she added, making it clear that golf should be enjoyable, not an endurance test. Her other major gripe, players who take the game far too seriously. I think my pet peeve with casual golfers is golfers who care too much. Like, why are you getting this angry over a shot? We’re out there to have fun, she said. For West, nothing spoils the mood faster than someone overthinking every swing or sulking after a bad shot. She also suggested that sometimes the best move is simply to concede and move on. “Yeah, at that point, just pick it up. I’ll pick it up and throw it,” she joked, highlighting that dragging out a hole with multiple bad shots is unnecessary. In her view, casual rounds should be about laughter and flow, not grinding through frustration. The podcast hosts added to the fun, asking about players who insist on giving a blowby-blow recap of their round, even when no one asked. West admitted those can be equally tough, even for her. Slow play has been a hot button topic at both the amateur and professional levels with real consequences for those who fall out of pace. At the 2025 Black Desert Championship, LPGA Pro Chisado EY received a two-stroke penalty for slow play after already being warned. The penalty turned a par into a double bogey, causing her to miss the cut by two shots. On the corn ferry tour, Bryson Nimmer was hit with a onestroke penalty at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship after taking 68 seconds for a shot, 18 seconds over the allowed limit. He too missed the cut. Even PGA Tour veterans have addressed the problem. Earlier this year, Charlie Hoffman sent a letter urging fellow players to speed up, echoing a similar memo from Justin Thomas. We all need to take responsibility to be ready when it’s our turn to play. Hoffman wrote for Michelle West, the message is simple. Golf, especially casual golf, should never feel like a grind. Her blunt remarks are a reminder that whether you’re a weekend player or a touring pro, pace matters. The game is at its best when it’s fast, fun, and stressfree.
