A woman holding a drink suddenly throws Phil Mickelson’s ball. His second shot sails way right. The ball flies toward the grandstands. When Phil arrives at the spot, his ball is nowhere to be seen. The reason? A woman nearby said the ball landed close to her, so she picked it up. By rule 9.6, Phil asked her to simply place the ball back on the ground, but she didn’t understand and tossed it instead. It was an awkward moment, but thankfully the spot was identified. Phil smoothed things over by giving her a signed ball. Then, under local rule F23, he received free relief, moving to the opposite side of the grand stand, closer to the green.
