Nelly Korda Fan Loses $15,000 to Shocking Scam | LPGA Stars Expose Fake Accounts

The bond between golf fans and their favorite players often runs deep, but that same devotion has also made them prime targets for online scammers. Over the past few years, impersonators posing as LPGA stars have tricked unsuspecting admirers in a handing over life savings. One fan reportedly lost a staggering $70,000 believing he was speaking with Rose Jeang, while another even flew across the world to Asia in hopes of marrying her. Now, a heartbreaking new case has surfaced involving Nelly Corda. A devoted supporter of the world number one was conned out of $15,000, leaving Corta shaken and speaking out. The Athletic recently went undercover to expose the growing problem. Reporters set up a fake fan account, followed a real LPGA player, and almost immediately drew the attention of a scammer posing as the golfer. The staged experiment revealed the frighteningly simple tactics these fraudsters use. Starting with casual introductions before quickly escalating into emotional manipulation designed to win trust and extract money. For Corda, one recent case was especially disturbing. A 72year-old man from South Carolina contacted by an account claiming to be her became convinced he was speaking to the real deal. Their conversations began in June 2024 and escalated so rapidly that he believed marriage was on the horizon. In the process, he transferred $15,000 money from his retirement savings despite repeated warnings from his children. At one point, he even prepared to sell his house to fund the supposed marriage. It wasn’t until the scammer fabricated a story about Corda suffering an injury, an injury never reported publicly, that the man finally realized he had been duped. By then, his retirement fund was gone. For athletes like Corda, these cases are deeply unsettling. Not only do they tarnish their reputations, but they also leave them feeling helpless as fans are exploited in their names. To raise awareness, Court has pinned a permanent warning to her official Instagram account, stating, “I’ve noticed an increase in fake accounts using my name to try to scam people. Please know I will never ask any of my fans for any money. Any outreach on my behalf is fake and run by scammers.” She also publishes her verified usernames to help fans avoid confusion. Ca admits the sheer scale of the issue is overwhelming. You’re just put into a situation you really don’t want to be in. You feel bad. You feel guilty for people going through this. It’s the last thing you want, she explained. It’s not only putting the players in danger in a sense, but it’s putting all the fans in danger. She reports an average of 20 fake accounts every single day. Yet, the scams continue to spread. Other LPGA stars have also stepped forward to protect their supporters. Michelle West took to social media earlier this season to remind fans that she is just one official account, urging them to report any imposters. She revealed that several fake profiles have already reached out to her followers requesting money under false pretenses. Charlie Hall issued a similar plea, stressing, “I will never ask for money or gift cards in exchange for meet and greets or fan club membership. There are so many fake accounts out there claiming to be me. If you’re contacted by them, please please report. Let’s stick together so we can beat the scammers. Hull’s warning came after several fans were targeted in late 2024 when imposters claimed to be her and demanded payment for exclusive access, fan clubs, and meet and greets. Her public statement helped prevent further damage, but it highlighted just how creative scammers have become. Despite repeated efforts by players, the schemes only continue to evolve, praying on the loyalty and admiration of golf’s most passionate fans. While scammers exploit hope and trust, the LPGA community is rallying together to educate supporters and fight back. The message from the pros is clear. Never send money. Never trust unverified accounts. And always report suspicious behavior. As golf grows in global popularity, the sport thrives on genuine love and respect between players and fans, not on exploitation. Together, fans and professionals alike must stand united to shut down scammers and protect the integrity of the game.
