Jack Nicklaus: In His Own Words | The Masters

Six-time Masters champion shares his memories of Augusta National.

Since 1934, the Masters Tournament has been home to some of golf’s greatest moments. Amidst blooming azaleas, towering pines and flowering dogwoods, the first full week of April ushers in a stage unique to golf and to sport. Over four days and 72 holes, the smallest field in major championship golf competes for a chance to capture the Green Jacket and a place in Masters history.

  1. Seeing Jack & Seve embrace after their battle down the straight in 1986 after one of the greatest masters ever was an abiding memory. Thanks for everything Jack 👍

  2. Let’s see. Politically fractured game. Unbelievably well compensated players, greedy for more. Crappy fields with exclusions. Being told the PGA tour is the best players on the world – total lie; half the field is unknowns. Tiger Woods destroying the coverage when he plays, is thinking about playing, or too injured to play. Being told Tiger is going to lead the healing of golf. And now, I can’t watch the fricking tournament. Live From is not golf. Golf needs to get its act together. This happens in the tell world when sponsors pull back and players get reduced purses and there are less spots. I’m at the point where I am beginning to root for this. Jack should not still be carrying the game. At least it’s better than hearing that Tiger has a hang nail and it is interrupting his Navy Seal training as he beds Trump’s ex-daughter in law.

  3. Can't imagine what the early Legends would have done with today's equipment and ball. Jack was hitting it over 300 yards with a wooden driver.

  4. What a humble guy! Best ever and for the foreseeable future. Seemed to take a conservative play in golf, a student of the game.

  5. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see Jack being an Honorary Starter for more than 2 more years.

It's almost like this is his farewell message to the Masters, the patrons and the fans.

  6. even if Jack was just a normal guy, who ran the local hardware store, he would still be a champion human being. A great guy and someone truly worth knowing.

  7. Truly, the GOAT!!! The Golden Bear!! 'Buckeye' legend!! We'll never see another like him. No drama, just a pure golf champion, gentleman, and family man. And one cannot leave out his partner and driving force in life… his wife, Barbara.

  8. As great as he is/was I kinda think he was real lucky in 1986. Aussie Great White Shark Greg Norman stood on the 18th tee with Nicklaus in the clubhouse a par would have won it. But I suspect he was overcome with emotion, did he want to deny his golfing hero a 6th Masters Jacket the result a bogey (or was it a double) and the Golden Bear had his 6th and last. Norman would have two or three more “winning chances “ but would walk away from Augusta empty!

  9. I remember watching Nicklaus hit a drive at the old PAL tournament in about 1973? At a golf course near Detroit. I think at Wabeek? I still remember the ball flight. He hit a low fade down the middle, with wooden driver.

  10. And yet, despite all the deserved accolades and success, Jack and Barbara always put family first.
There is something to be said about perspective and morality. Jack gets it.
The Golden Bear living by The Golden Rule.
Thanks Jack and Barbara for leading by example

  11. something at Augusta National should be named after Jack, I think the 18th hole should be called Nicklaus, like the 9th at St Andrews is called Jones

  12. Mr Nicklaus, Thank you for a childhood spent watching you at my granddaddy’s knee. He’s gone 40 years now and I think of him most when I see you.

  13. My whole life watching Jack playing golf…. it's really kind of weird that Jack's been part of my life and it seems like we've been best friends forever…. absolutely love this man
