U.S. Open Pinehurst No. 2 Retrospective: 1999, 2005, 2014 | NLU Pod, Ep 850
Soly and KVV welcome TC for this Deep Dive pod as we look back to the 3 previous US Opens hosted at Pinehurst #2. We start with Payne Stewart’s iconic triumph in ’99 and Phil Mickelson’s close call. Then, it’s on to the carnage of 2005 with Michael Campbell emerging victorious on a crazy Sunday afternoon. We close with Martin Kaymer’s dominant win in 2014 after the course’s restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

Goosen was my golfer growing up. By 2005 he had forged a reputation as somewhat of a US Open specialist and I remember that the consensus going into that final round in 2005 was that it was close to a formality. I couldn't believe how quickly it went wrong for Retief in that final round. You wonder how much that affected him going forward as he never won another major even though he did feature on a few major leaderboards; people often forget he was right in the mix for the Stuart Cink Open win.
Turtleback.
A deep dive pod + a film room today, absolute sweepstakes
Content sweepstakes what a world we are living in
The Mickelson beeper code was “BOOBS” spelled like 80085.
My biggest memory of Michael Campbell is him doing the Haka at the Presidents Cup….Awesome
if you come for the crown, you better not miss
Watched the 99 open a couple weeks back. My god what a tournament. I still cannot believe Phil didn’t win; at no point on that back 9, outside of the 2 minute stretch from the putts on 17 to the drives on 18, did it feel like Phil wouldn’t win
People forget Retief was HIM in the early 2000s
Watched the 99 final round last night on the us open page. All time.
Oooooooooooo booooooyyyy
Cant go to work today boss, new NLU historical deep dive just dropped
Please never stop doing these
100%
These recap pods are top notch. Wasn't old enough to witness some of these at the time so going back to watch is always a good treat!
Earl would've been on EVERY damn podcast
My only ace is at the 9th hole at Pinehurst No2 last July 2023. Not from the US Open tees of course, but to learn I’m in the same company as Zach fucking Johnson makes me sad
2014 I went to the 3rd round. Amazing experience. The course looked literally impossible in person
Love these deep dives, thanks NLU, appreciate you!
Deep dives are fantastic! I remember 1999 so vividly and was about the same age as Soly. Stoked for Pinehurst next week!
Love you Mr. TC and don’t know how you feel about this guy but your look is giving me wiffs of Bob Menery.
fantastic deep dive– you guys are both diligent with your research and hilarious as well. best golf content on the web. keep it up boys. just finished watching your work on Australia. I am going in January 2025 and playing some of the courses you visited
TC looking like Bob Menery. Great stuff as always guys!
Soly fighting tears while reading and Tron throws in the “Let the boys watch” reference 😂
Well done KVV that was an amazing look back
Amy
This was a fantastic listen. Props to TC taking one for the team
Love these, especially the off course angles, much appreciate it guys, keep them rolling
So a story from 1999 open was Olazabal. He broke his hand after round 1 after hitting the wall with his hand. He had won the Masters just a few months earlier
Ashley Schaeffer approved, TC.
